LEGO The Lord of the Rings GWP with minifigures rumoured for Barad-dûr

A new LEGO The Lord of the Rings gift-with-purchase is rumoured to be on the way with Barad-dûr, and it could include up to three minifigures.

The LEGO Group teased its next Middle-earth set on its social media channels yesterday, giving us a first glimpse at the Eye of Sauron in bricks. While nothing has yet been confirmed, all signs are pointing to a LEGO set of Barad-dûr, the towering structure that sits deep in the heart of Mordor. And according to Brick Clicker, the set will be accompanied by an exclusive gift-with-purchase when it hits shelves.

40683 The Lord of the Rings: Fellbeast will apparently include a brick-built version of the legendary Middle-earth creature, atop which the Witch King and Nazgûl ride in Tolkien’s trilogy, alongside three unknown minifigures. If those characters turn out to be exclusive to this set, it could end up being one of the most highly-coveted gifts-with-purchase of all time.

That’s a perfect recipe for a promo that sells out on day one and then commands incredible aftermarket prices, so you’ll need to be ready at launch if you want to get your hands on it. But with one eye on the size of the giant flaming eye in the LEGO Group’s teaser, this is not going to be a cheap set – and it could easily rival the piece count and price point of 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell.

Exactly which minifigures could be included in 40683 The Lord of the Rings: Fellbeast has yet to be revealed. One possibility could be Eowyn, the Witch King and either Theoden or Merry, to recreate one of Return of the King’s most memorable moments (‘I am no man!’). But gifts-with-purchase rarely if ever include new moulds, so that might make the Witch King’s helmet tricky.

Another possibility could be Frodo, Sam and a generic Nazgûl, in a nod to the Hobbits’ brief journey through Osgiliath. That would sidestep both the need for new moulds and the unfortunate situation of locking highly-desirable Lord of the Rings characters behind an exclusive gift-with-purchase. We’ll hopefully find out either way in the next few days, as a wide reveal of Barad-dûr seems imminent.

While the chances of another LEGO The Lord of the Rings set seem pretty locked in after the LEGO Group’s teaser, existence of an accompanying gift-with-purchase has yet to be confirmed, so take it with a grain of salt for now.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
