LEGO throws it back to classic space monorail and fans can’t cope
The LEGO Group posted an innocent animated video of some classic LEGO Space sets but one inclusion has sent the comment section into a whirlwind.
Classic LEGO Space fans are having a strong year in 2024, between the upcoming release of 71046 Series 26 Space and various space-themed sets across LEGO City, Friends, Technic, and more. However, there’s nothing like the old days of classic LEGO Space for some fans – as evidenced by the feverish reaction in the comments of the LEGO Group’s latest Reel over on Instagram.
With today being the day to see a total solar eclipse in some areas of the world, the LEGO Group got into the swing of things by sharing a brick-built eclipse of its own, with a buildable moon being tugged in front of the sun, with various popular classic sets featured in the scene. These include what looks like 1979’s 928 Galaxy Explorer (remade in 2022 in 10497 Galaxy Explorer), 1978’s 483 Alpha-1 Rocket Base, 493 Space Command Center, 1986’s 6940 Alien Moon Stalker, and 1987’s 6953 Cosmic Laser Launcher.

Perhaps most excitingly and taking centre stage, however, is 6990 Monorail Transport System. The classic monorail has long since been a fan favourite, with many regularly calling for it to make its return. Crossing two major areas over with another – space and trains – 6990 Monorail Transport System is recreated here down to the finer details, even emblazoned with 9V on the side.
While this Reel is an animation and therefore wouldn’t require actual built sets in order to film it, could it be a hint that a LEGO Space monorail is on the way? Some fans in the comments certainly think so.
“Is this a trailer for the upcoming re-release of the classic space series including the monorail?” wrote one helpful Instagram user, while another went straight to begging: “Please bring back this theme, including the monorail!”
Realistically, this video likely isn’t a sign of an upcoming monorail release. Indeed, it’s not the first time something similar has been teased to no avail. While the LEGO Group is packing out shelves for different options for LEGO Space fans, there’s been no whisper of a brick-built monorail on the horizon. Who knows, however, if 2024 releases go well, perhaps it could be on the cards. In any case, the dozens of comments below that Reel are certainly indications that a re-release of the monorail would go down well within the community.
