LEGO Transformers Soundwave’s best features can’t be seen in pictures

Although the appearance of LEGO Icons 10358 Soundwave has piqued fans’ interest, the best features can’t translate into photos.

10358 Soundwave packs quite the punch from pictures alone; the retro colour scheme, the artful details, and the impressive cassette player build are just a few features that have captured the hearts of Transformers fans. However, there’s even more to the upcoming LEGO Icons Transformers set than meets the eye.

During the launch livestream, the LEGO designers pointed out various features that you might not pick up from photos. For example, 10358 Soundwave also includes alternative printed Ravage and Laserbeak yellow tiles that can be attached to the mini transformed version of Soundwave, with one hidden inside the display base when not being used. That helps bring the even tinier build to life still further, if you prefer to display the main build in humanoid robot form.

Speaking of that form, the brick-built model also has double-jointed elbows for poseability. That allows you to pose the first LEGO Decepticon in various fight stances as you please, with his bulky limbs able to spin and twist in virtually every direction.

The play features continue with one you will probably have been able to spot: the eject button opens Soundwave’s chest. What you might not have picked up on, on the other hand, is the satisfying click noise that happens when you do so, as we pointed out in our in-depth review, adding to the authentic feel of the set, as if it really is a cassette player.

The LEGO designers also laid out which elements are new to the set, including two printed cassette tiles, printed Decepticon logos, printed cassette reels, a printed eight-by-five window element for the chest, a Bionicle hand in dark blue, and fingers in dark blue. Outside of parts, there are also some stickers that allow you to customise the set so you can choose whether to display 10358 Soundwave as either the G1 toy or cartoon versions.

All in all, there’s still a lot to discover, even if you’ve been devouring every image of the LEGO Icons set since its reveal last week. If that’s convinced you that you need 10358 Soundwave in your collection, then you’ll be able to pick it up from August 1 if you’re a member of LEGO Insiders or from August 4 for everyone else. At whatever date, the LEGO Icons set will retail for £159.99 / $189.99 / €179.99.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
