LEGO VIP point accumulation rate changes

The good news that LEGO gift vouchers cost fewer VIP points was premature, with the rate of accumulation slowing too.

Yesterday saw the unveiling of a new LEGO VIP Reward Centre, that offers new ways for fans to spend the VIP points they earn at shop.LEGO.com, including ‘buying’ exclusive items with the points. A positive takeaway was that a £5 LEGO gift voucher cost just 800 points instead of the previous 1,000… but it turns out there is a catch.

Brickset reports that £1 now only earns fans 8 points instead of 10 – so there is no change in how quickly points turn into gift vouchers. A £100 purchase still nets a £5 gift voucher.

£1 = 8 points
€1 = 7.5 points
US $1 = 6.5 points
CAD $1 = 5 points
AU $1 = 4.5 points
NZ $1 = 4 points
1 DKK = 1 point
10 zl = 1.5 points

This seems to have been done to standardise the rate of accumulation, so fans will not get a different rate of points depending what country they are buying in.
So while the new Rewards Centre offers new opportunities, it does not offer an improved rate of return after all.

Fans will be keen to see how the program develops, and with plenty of appealing new sets such as LEGO Jurassic World 75936 Jurassic Park: T. rex Rampage and LEGO Creator Expert 10266 NASA Apollo 11 Lunar Lander (review) to choose from, there are lots of opportunities to earn points.
