LEGO Wicked sets were designed for both adults and kids – despite the mini-dolls
Despite including the usually child-focused mini-dolls, LEGO Wicked is intended for builders of all ages, according to the creative lead for the new theme.
Speaking to Fast Company, LEGO Wicked Creative Lead Raquel Ojeda Gregorio has pulled back the curtain on the design process behind the brand-new theme. She and her team had two markets in mind for the four sets: children under the age of eight who might be newcomers to the musical, and older children and adults who already love the musical.
Of course, different age groups have different wants for their LEGO sets, with older builders often wanting more of a challenge from the build and younger builders more interested in play opportunities – generally speaking, of course. Raquel explained that specific sets cater to those different age groups, with 75681 Glinda, Elphaba & Nessarose at Shiz Uni and 75684 Welcome to Emerald City more suitable for younger builders, and 75682 Elphaba & Glinda Figures and 75683 Glinda & Elphaba’s Dormitory for older fans.
You can therefore expect a more complex build process from the later two and, as can already be seen in the official images, more display-oriented design features. Likewise, the first two listed above offer more chances for play and interactivity, ideal for younger people.
Raquel also revealed what material she had to work on when designing the LEGO Wicked sets, having not seen the movie yet. She met with Jon Chu, the live-action film’s director, to get more detail on the new iteration of the story and she was able to read through the script.
“It was like trying to put a puzzle together because we won’t be able to see the movie until it comes out,” Raquel said. “But all the ingredients were starting to come together. After going to London, I came back to Lego to create a team and started to design some models that we thought would be best for the consumer.”
All four LEGO Wicked sets will be available to buy from October 1. Check out the full details below.
