A closer look at LEGO Icons Black Pearl’s minifigures

LEGO Icons 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship includes eight minifigures, three of which are brand new to the LEGO system.

Of the eight minifigures included in 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship, three are new and all of them feature new minifigure designs and details. The character selection places the LEGO Icons set squarely in the first movie, although there are minor references and allusions to events that take place later on as well.

We’re digging into the details of each minifigure here, including insights from LEGO Designer Mike Psiaki shared in a LEGO Fan Media roundtable where relevant.

Captain Jack Sparrow

Captain Jack Sparrow has had several iterations over the years, typically with brown or dark red legs, paired with an open blue shirt on the torso. This is the first time that he appears to have dual-moulded legs, leaning into the long blue coat and tunic that he often sports. As a pirate, he’s all about the layers in his clothing, and the detailed printing goes a long way in bringing this to life.

Of course, Jack’s signature accessory is his hat – something that was a point of discussion in the design process.

“Funnily enough, when we were first discussing what we would do for Jack Sparrow, the original thought was to do something as a dual-moulded solution,” Mike explained. “In the end, it just made a lot more sense because the dual mould wouldn’t get us to the end result we wanted anyway.

“We wanted to do the bandana, we wanted to do some of the details in his hair, so we thought it actually turned out to be a better solution to just make a single moulded element and then do all of the extra colour and decoration. It’s produced in a very similar way to how the original one was produced, but it’s actually a totally new sculpt.”

Will Turner

Next up is Will Turner, who has only been seen as a minifigure once before. He has a whole new, more detailed look, with more richly detailed printing on the torso, where before he only wore a plain white shirt. He appears to use the same face print and a similar hair piece, only in a slightly lighter shade that more closely matches his on-screen look.

Elizabeth Swann

Elizabeth Swann also has the same face print and hair, but now with the pale yellow dress she wears for the first section of The Curse of the Black Pearl. She admittedly doesn’t stay in this get-up for long in the movie, swapping it for pirate garb pretty quickly, but it helps her to stand out agains the pirate-dominated minifigure cast.

Captain Hector Barbossa

Speaking of which, we move on to our second captain within just one set: Captain Barbossa. He looks to have a similar, but not identical, face print as 2011’s 4181 Isla De Muerta, with bushy eyebrows and deails to highlight his grizzled appearance.

In some lifestyle pictures, Barbossa is displayed with an apple, as he’s often seen eating one in his most dramatic moments. No arm printing, as with all the minifigures in this set, but detailed enough printing on both the legs and torso.

Gibbs

Joshamee Gibbs comes with a fresh face print, adding extra depth to his beard and eyebrows, as you’d expect from a man used to life on the high seas. No leg and arm printing can be seen, but he’s sporting a different torso from when we saw him last in 2011’s 4184 Black Pearl.

Cotton

Onto the first of three minifigure debuts in 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship, Cotton comes equipped with his trusty parrot. As a lower-ranking pirate, his clothing is printed with holes and he looks generally a bit worse for wear – including the fact he also has no leg printing.

Anamaria

Anamaria also makes her LEGO debut, a rare moment where a Zoe Saldana minifigure is human rather than an alien. Another simple but effective design, it stays close to her on-screen appearance, backed with a sword accessory for easy display.

Marty

Last but not least, Marty’s diminutive size is represented with shorter legs. His brightly coloured clothing makes for a fetching torso print, once again sticking close to his cinematic appearance in The Curse of the Black Pearl.

LEGO Icons 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship will be available to buy from September 12 for LEGO Insiders and from September 15 for everyone else, coming with its own exclusive GWP, Captain Jack Sparrow’s Compass, between September 12 and 18, or while stocks last.
