Massive LEGO Mario Kart set has incredibly specific pieces

The LEGO Group has unveiled 72037 Mario & Standard Kart as the biggest build of the iconic kart to date, with some unusually specific elements.

LEGO Super Mario is no stranger to new pieces, debuting everything from caps, crowns and curved plates to the variety of electronic figures for the course-building system. This trend continues with some especially particular pieces in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart when it launches on May 15 for £139.99 / $169.99 / €169.99. Pre-orders are open now with double points for a limited time.

The specific elements in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart most notably include a new moulded moustache for the famous plumber. The new black piece has six studs and seemingly has gaps around the edge to place it entirely on exposed studs.

That suggests that the LEGO designers will try and find uses for the element beyond Mario’s moustache, but other than clouds, nothing immediately springs to mind.

Sitting on top of the moustache piece is a new moulded nose, shaped to perfectly match Mario’s nose with a stepped bottom to fit perfectly on the moustache.

The nose is a specific shape, curving to fit the proportions of the plumber accordingly, with seemingly no room to place elements next to it. We wonder if the designers might be able to find a place for it in brick-built creatures and maybe even LEGO Architecture.

These two elements are undoubtedly fairly specific to Super Mario and Mario especially, but they’re not the first distinctly Mario elements on the market. The 8-bit piece from 71374 Nintendo Entertainment System is also in this limited category.

One less-specific piece debuting in 72037 Mario & Standard Kart is a new six-by-six rounded tile with Mario’s signature emblem. This is by far the biggest circular tile ever designed, and it’s not going to be nearly as difficult for designers to find other uses for it as the other two new pieces in this set.

72037 Mario & Standard Kart is available to pre-order now worldwide for £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99 with double LEGO Insiders points until March 11, releasing on May 15.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
