Memory Lane: The LEGO Club badge

I hope that readers  have been enjoying my look back through the archives here on BF. It has really made me look through all the stuff I have collected over the last few years and marvel at what LEGO was 20-30 years ago. Being the retro man that I am I have to say that I love looking back…..more so than the stuff we have today.

I knew that I had some more LEGO Club goodies somewhere and whilst looking for spare parts, I found my bag of stuff. Stuff inside was all kinds of random bits I have not thrown away since 1984 odd. Just a small freezer bag’s worth, but within I eventually found my LEGO Club badges.

The first one is the one that you receive when you first joined the LEGO Club. I am sure I wore it a fair few times, but as from the pictures, it is a little worse for wear. Not surprising as it is 30 years old.

The rear catch has fallen off, and the point is sharper than a Sabatier knife. The badge came with the Welcome pack (stickers, sew on patch) for all new members.

The next one pictured is the Gold Senior Club Member badge. Upon renewal, you got one of these as part of the Senior Membership pack and as it was all “Gold” a certain sense of smugness also prevailed…….which for some reason made me think I was the best builder in the world! Surprisingly this is in good nick…..

Now that I have found these again, I am going to keep them very safely. I have so much clearing up and tidying to do of my LEGO archives that these two items need to be added to the fold. It should be noted that these badges were only given as part of the The LEGO Club UK membership pack at around 1985-1988. Prior to this the smaller enamel badge was for the The LEGO Builders Club.

I used to wear small badges (silly ones) at 6th Form and Uni. Type of thing you do when you are that age. I am half tempted to wear my gold one into the London office when I am back – not sure it would go down well at customer meeting however.

My next trip down Memory Lane will look at the LEGO Club sticker sheets involved – miraculously I have one still fully intact.

My name is Keith and I am a AFOL. Currently an expat living out in Basel, CH, but have a firm footing back in the UK when time permits.

I have had had Lego ever since I can remember - and only until my wee one came along have I re-kindled the flame for building again.

I also run matchbox1-75.co.uk, a resource site for the 1-75 series of miniatures by Matchbox.

There are only three themes that I am get/collect (finances permitting) - City, Creator (Advanced and Expert) as well as the classic Star Wars sets from Eps IV to VI (anything else does not exist). I also keep an eye in Europe with ample chance to see how France, Germany and Switzerland market and offer LEGO.
