Mini Steamboat Willie GWP looks like a LEGO Ideas project

The reveal of 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie makes it the second build based on the iconic Disney short, but it looks more like a LEGO Ideas project.

Recently revealed by a LEGO Certified Store, 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie isn't the first LEGO set to be based on the Disney short film of the same name. Back in 2019, 21317 Steamboat Willie released under LEGO Ideas, inspired by an approved submission from Máté Szabó.

Looking at the two side-by-side, it's clear that the gift-with-purchase isn't quite as big as the 751-piece LEGO Ideas set. However, its size appears to put it closer to that original project.

It's an interesting moment for the project after the many changes that were made to the 2019 LEGO Ideas model. At least Máté Szabó will be able to pick up an official build to pair with their copy of 21317 Steamboat Willie that more closely resembles their original design.

The comparison is most notable when looking at the crane at the back of the GWP and the fan-designed model. It's not quite the same scale, but it should sit nicely in the middle of the official and unofficial designs.

Exactly when the GWP will be offered has not been officially confirmed but the post shared by the LEGO Certified Store had the deal scheduled for between October 23 and 31 with a threshold of 5,000 THB (roughly £110) restricted to LEGO DisneyStar Wars, and Marvel.
