Seven of the most innovative builds in LEGO BDP Series 8
Fan-centred initiatives like the LEGO BrickLink Designer Program are often the source of some innovative new LEGO models.
Opening up avenues for anyone and everyone to create LEGO sets means a whole lot more ideas floating around, leading to some very creative ideas. LEGO BrickLink Designer Program Series 8 is no different, with dozens of innovative ideas.
With so many to choose from, we’ve picked out a few of the highlights, but make sure to click through to the full collection to check out the others.
3+1 axis manipulable jet plane with shifting wings
Designer: vinz06 Pieces: 1,516 BrickLink: Vote now

vinz06’s manipulable jet plane with variable geometric forward-swept wings features 100% mechanical Technic functions, offering a lot of posing and play options throughout the wings. With a ready-made landing strip, the three-axis rotation gimbal allows for roll, pitch and yaw manoeuvres, all tied together in an impressively technical build.
Hot Air Balloon
Designer: ExeSandbox Pieces: 876 BrickLink: Vote now

ExeSandbox’s Hot Air Balloon proves that innovation doesn’t need to be complex, with a relatively simple approach to creating a rainbow balloon. However, the inclusion of the clouds really helps force the perspective of this balloon being up amongst the crowds, making for an eye-catching display.
4 Seasons Box
Designer: KolbiCraft Pieces: 771 BrickLink: Vote now

Another remarkably simple idea, KolbiCraft’s 4 Seasons Box features all four of the year’s seasons. All the sides have the same base for an appealing symmetrical look but there are flowers on each side to rotate throughout every season, for a neat decor piece.
Anchored Isle
Designer: ztbricks Pieces: 3,774 BrickLink: Vote now

Another play on perspectives, ztbricks’ Anchored Isle appears to defy gravity with brick-built chains supporting the island on top. The blue base adds to the effect and you could easily make this simple idea your own by decorating the island on top.
Pirate Haven
Designer: elevenmocs Pieces: 4,000 BrickLink: Vote now

elevenmocs’ Pirate Haven uses a whopping 4,000 pieces to recreate an unusual structure, with a harbour along the front, playing into the height of the set with an upper level of shops of buildings. The tropical environment is highlighted with foliage throughout.
Sword in the stone
Designer: LarsHaakon Pieces: 827 BrickLink: Vote now

LEGO Castle sets are all the rage right now, but LarsHaakon’s Sword in the stone puts a play on the medieval fantasy trope, with an item straight out of King Arthur’s legends. Taking a similar approach to LEGO Marvel 76029 Thor’s Hammer, it really looks like you could pull the sword out at any moment, putting a fun twist on display-ready models.
Tennis Match
Designer: midian454 Pieces: 828 BrickLink: Vote now

Interactive sets are always a fun concept, and midian454’s Tennis Match ticks that box. Turning the crank on the side sends the players running down the service line to hit the ball back and forth across the court in a never-ending rally.

I love the way the hot air balloon plays with your sense of perspective! It would work particularly well on a clean white shelf.
Mind you, all of these builds are designed to sit on a shelf… Wouldn’t it also be innovative to see some builds that forego the shelf altogether, and can hang directly on your wall?
(Okay, shameless plug over, but you can’t blame a guy for trying, can you? ;P )
