The three new Star Wars movies are ‘pretty far along’

The announcement of three movies at Star Wars Celebration may be exciting, but some have been in development for a while.

The first panel at Star Wars Celebration 2023 has revealed that a movie about the first Jedi, a New Republic-era film and one following The Rise of Skywalker including Rey are coming. President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy has revealed that the wait for some of them might not be as long as expected too.

“We’re pretty far along,” Kennedy said in an interview with IGN. “These are things, as you can imagine – certainly looking at what Dave’s been doing with Ahsoka – that’ll be at least six, seven years building to what it is we’re going to be doing in a movie.”

Referring to the post The Rise of Skywalker and Dawn of the Jedi movies from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and James Mangold, Kennedy continued, “As far as Sharmeen, we’ve been working on that for a couple of years already. And with what Jim’s doing, Jim and I, because we had the benefit of doing Indiana Jones together, there was a lot of discussion about what that story is.

“What’s great about Jim, is he’s a writer director, much like David Filoni is, so he can move that along at a pretty fast pace. So everything’s kind of moving along. We may have a really nice situation where we have all of these things ready to go, and we can take our time figuring out when we make them.”

While nothing concrete was mentioned, the interview suggests that these ideas have been in circulation for some time and that there may be a Star Wars movie on the big screen sooner than previously thought.

The interview also revealed that the script for Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film is currently being written and that is still coming.
