New Star Wars film trilogy reportedly in the works

A new trilogy of live-action Star Wars films is reportedly in development, one that might continue the Skywalker saga up to Episode XII.

We’ve had plenty of reports of more live-action Star Wars movies drip-fed to us over the last few years, with many never having seen the light of day. What we do know is that The Mandalorian & Grogu will arrive in 2026, a new film centred around Rey is in the works and an untitled James Mangold movie will be set in the distant past of a galaxy far, far away.

Now comes word from Variety that a new trilogy of Star Wars films is said to be in development at Disney, one that may continue the Skywalker saga through episodes X, XI and XII. The exclusive story reveals that Lucasfilm has apparently tapped Simon Kinberg to write the films and produce them with Kathleen Kennedy.

Conflicting sources in the article go on to suggest that the movies will instead comprise an all-new trilogy saga that would sit alongside existing Star Wars projects, but neither option has been officially confirmed so far.

Simon Kinberg previously worked with Dave Filoni and Lucasfilm on Star Wars Rebels, where they co-created the Emmy-nominated animated series. He also acted as a consultant on The Force Awakens and has been involved with numerous film projects over the years such as Logan, Deadpool & Wolverine, The Martian and many others.

For now, fans may want to temper their enthusiasm for a new Star Wars live-action trilogy until such time as Lucasfilm officially announces any such projects. However, as Rogue Squadron’s Patty Jenkins is all too aware, just because a Star Wars project is announced, doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll ever make its way on to the big screen…
