PSA: Now is the time to buy a LEGO Star Wars BD-1 minifigure

Following recent LEGO Star Wars announcements, now is the time to snap up a LEGO BD-1 minifigure from the aftermarket if you don’t have one already.

Included exclusively in the now-retired 75335 BD-1 (with his familiar red and white printing at least), the Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor droid will be an essential purchase for many LEGO Star Wars fans come August 1. That’s when a brand new Cal Kestis minifigure will drop in 75394 Imperial Star Destroyer, bringing Respawn’s video game protagonist to LEGO Star Wars for the first time.

The Jedi is not accompanied by his trusty droid sidekick in that LEGO Star Wars 25th anniversary set, but anyone who’s played either or both of the recent third-person action-adventure games will know that Cal and BD-1 are basically inseparable. He’s not going to look complete on your shelf without BD – but the droid is currently only available to purchase on the aftermarket.

He’s not cheap either, currently commanding at least £12 on BrickLink for what’s effectively a single-piece character – and that’s before you add in shipping fees. Shopping locally might be your best bet, but there’s only one UK seller on BrickLink with BD-1 in stock at the time of writing (with four available at £17.50 each), while in the US prices start at $20 per minifigure.

Now that the LEGO Group is finally coming through with a Cal Kestis minifigure, the price of BD-1 is likely only going to go in one direction. That’s all the more likely given he’s showing up in a 25th-anniversary set, joining other obscure characters like Darth Malak and ARC Trooper Fives, suggesting we won’t be seeing a minifigure-scale Jedi: Fallen Order set any time soon (so no re-emergence of BD-1).

If you’re happy to snap up a BD droid in a different colourway, there’s always BD-72, who appears exclusively in 75325 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter. That set is still available at retail, while the droid itself is available in vast quantities (one Czech Republic seller has more than 400 in stock) for around £3 to £4 on BrickLink. BD-1 is customisable in-game, after all.

But if it’s the classic colour scheme you’re after, best hop over to BrickLink (or your preferred secondary marketplace – others are available) and snap one up now. Alternatively, you could consider picking up 75335 BD-1 as a whole, which is available from around £70 on the aftermarket (or less than its original retail price!).

75394 Imperial Star Destroyer launches August 1 for £149.99 / $169.99 / €169.99 and is available to pre-order now in the US.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
