The oldest LEGO set left on shelves is finally retiring in 2025
Just two LEGO Architecture sets are retiring by the end of 2025 – including the oldest LEGO set currently available on shelves.
Some LEGO themes, like Friends and City, have such incredibly high turnover that sets can retire within six or nine months of launching. But others pump out so few sets by comparison that their products tend to stick around much longer – like LEGO Architecture, which typically debuts only one or two new sets per year. It means that its bestsellers enjoy much greater lifespans than other sets, including 21028 New York City.
The Big Apple’s skyline originally launched all the way back in 2016, which makes it the oldest LEGO set on the market right now (even older than Creator 3-in-1’s 31058 Mighty Dinosaurs and Star Wars’ 75192 Millennium Falcon, which both debuted in 2017). But unless things change between now and the end of the year, it will finally retire for good in 2025.

21028 New York City is one of two LEGO Architecture sets slated for retirement by December 31, alongside another veteran skyline in 2019’s 21044 Paris. Surviving into 2026 (for now) are 2017 releases 21034 London and 21037 LEGO House, along with 21042 Statue of Liberty, 21058 Great Pyramid of Giza and 21060 Himeji Castle. 21061 Notre-Dame de Paris, meanwhile, is hanging around until 2027.
That just leaves the newly-revealed 21062 Trevi Fountain, which will arrive on shelves March 1 and is currently scheduled to stay in production until at least the end of 2028. That could all change in the months and years to come – but if earlier Architecture sets are any indication, the Roman monument’s shelf life is probably only going to go in one direction.

Would that make it the set with the longest lifespan?
I’m sure arguments could be made for a baseplate but that’s not really a set.
