There is a chance you already own a throwback set created by the fan designer behind the recently revealed LEGO The X-Files set.
Brent Waller, whose LEGO Ideas username is WetWired, is no stranger to seeing his fan submissions become official LEGO sets, and 21369 The X-Files will actually be his third model to hit shelves.
Back in 2013, Brent submitted a design for a Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary set, featuring the four original members, Ecto-1 and the iconic firehouse.
After the project reached the required 10,000 supporters, the LEGO Group decided to only move forward with the Ecto-1 portion of the build. On June 1, 2014, 21108 Ghostbusters Ecto-1 arrived as a 508-piece recreation of the car driven in the movie.
It was clear from then on that Brent had a passion for nostalgic properties from before the year 2000, and that theme has continued throughout his LEGO Ideas journey.
Brent would next see one of his designs become an official set in August 2021. Two years earlier, he had submitted a fan design based on the iconic 1990s sitcom Seinfeld, again celebrating the show’s 30th anniversary.
The project reached 10,000 supporters in October 2019, and 21328 Seinfeld hit shelves in July 2021. Once again, the LEGO Group made changes to the original submission, transforming the build into a more recognisable television set rather than a straightforward recreation of Jerry’s apartment.
Both of these sets have now been retired, but Brent’s work is finally returning to LEGO Stores with 21369 The X-Files. This time, his latest release is not tied to a 30th anniversary celebration, but instead comes from a LEGO Ideas challenge titled ‘Build Your Nostalgia – 90s Throwback!’
Brent has proven that nostalgic themes are his speciality. The design he submitted was a larger and more detailed version of a previous Mulder’s Office LEGO Ideas project, which he submitted in May 2019. That earlier project reached 10,000 supporters but was ultimately not selected to become an official set.
Now, years later, the upgraded and improved version of that concept will finally be available to fans.
You may already own Brent’s Ecto-1 or Seinfeld set, or this could be your first chance to own one of his creations. Either way, 21369 The X-Files launches on August 1 for LEGO Insiders and August 4 for everyone else, priced at £179.99 / $199.99 / €199.99 with 1,478 pieces.
All purchases of the set will also include a free 40896 The X-Files: Scully’s Lab until August 10, or while stocks last.
