Rare LEGO animal rumoured to return in 2024, alongside three brand new animals

LEGO City is shaping up to be leading the charge in the LEGO animal kingdom once again in 2024, with the debut of three brand new animals – and the return of one very rare and expensive species.

This summer’s LEGO City line-up is rumoured to include the first Jungle subtheme since 2017, with a total of four different sets across a range of price points. They’re said to consist of a mix of different vehicles, including a helicopter, off-roader, plane and quad bike – but more interesting will be the various wildlife thought to be scattered throughout the quartet.

Instagram user 1414falconfan reports (via Brick Clicker) that the new LEGO City Jungle 2024 sets will include a gorilla, baby gorilla and red panda for the first time, each using new-for-2024 pieces. And just like last year’s Deep Sea/Arctic subtheme delivered an attractive range of animals across relatively inexpensive sets, including 60376 Arctic Explorer Snowmobile and 60377 Explorer Diving Boat, the Jungle 2024 wave sounds surprisingly cheap.

The red panda, for example, is slated to be included in a $9.99 set – 60424 Jungle Quadbike with Red Panda – which is $1 cheaper than 60376 Arctic Explorer Snowmobile (which includes a new-for-2023 baby seal element). Two of the other three sets come in at $19.99 and $29.99 respectively, while 60437 Jungle Helicopter & Explorer Base tops out at $99.99. That represents a relatively affordable wave of sets even compared to the 2017 Jungle range.

Getting your hands on those new animals shouldn’t mean breaking the bank, then. And that’s even better news when taking into account the fourth animal currently rumoured to be among the menagerie: a tiger. The only minifigure-scale LEGO tiger to date appeared in 2017’s 60162 Jungle Air Drop Helicopter, and new examples of the piece start from £40 on BrickLink.

Even if the tiger remains locked to the biggest set in the rumoured summer 2024 LEGO City range, it would still present a more realistic way of adding one to your collection than the aftermarket as things stand. Whether or not the newer version would impact the price of the original animal depends heavily on whether it’s a direct re-release of the 2017 animal, or whether the LEGO Group has revised and updated it for 2024.

Rumours surrounding the LEGO City summer 2024 range should still be taken lightly at this stage. We’ll hopefully learn more about what’s coming our way in June and beyond over the next few months.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
