Retired LEGO Marvel set makes surprise appearance in What If…? Season 2

The fifth episode of What If…? Season 2 on Disney+ features a surprise appearance by a long-since retired LEGO Marvel set.

Disney+ dropped the second season of its animated What If…? series on December 22, with new episodes being added to the streaming service each day until December 30. The show continues to deliver stories from across the length and breadth of the MCU, offering up alternate takes on fan-favourite characters and familiar stories.

That certainly holds true for the fifth episode of What If…? Season 2, which focuses on Captain Carter teaming up with Black Widow in the modern world and discovering that Steve Rogers is in fact alive. We last saw Rogers strapped into the Hydra Stomper in Season 1, just before Peggy vanished into a portal. Returned to the present day, she not only finds out the mechanised monster is still active decades later, but that Rogers is trapped inside the beast and brainwashed by the Red Room.

A version of the mech last appeared in 76201 Captain Carter & The Hydra Stomper, a 343-piece model that retired back in 2022. The LEGO Marvel set included minifigures of Captain Carter, Steve Roger and the Red Skull, with the Stomper itself boasting a primarily green colour scheme that didn’t quite match the grey look of the machine in What If…? Season 1. The returning Hydra Stomper in Season 2 is also metallic grey, but has at least been upgraded with new weapons and Russian symbols.

The time would therefore seem right for an updated version of the mech to be released as a LEGO Marvel set, one that could potentially offer a much more accurate build. We’d like to see such a model include any details that were missing from 76201 Captain Carter & The Hydra Stomper, and the appropriate colour scheme, as well as the mech’s huge jetpack thrusters.

What If…? Season 2 is currently streaming on Disney+ for all subscribers, with the final episode dropping on December 30.
