Retiring LEGO set can be bonus Project Hail Mary build

A LEGO set due to retire in just a few months can be used to build a bonus Project Hail Mary model, and it’s causing excitement online.

Project Hail Mary fans are avid after the release of the movie earlier this month, with several sharing that they’ve picked up the one and only LEGO set inspired by the film. 11389 Project Hail Mary doesn’t have to be the sole representation of the film in your collection, though.

Jordan DeVries, who you may remember from the Turgle alternate build shared last year, has remixed another LEGO Creator 3-in-1 set into another sci-fi creature. They’ve taken 31162 Cute Bunny and turned it into a fully posable Rocky model. It’s considerably larger than the small figure depicted in 11389 Project Hail Mary.

The custom Rocky figure can move its five arms just as you’ll see in the film, able to recreate poses such as the jazz hands. One of the most appealing parts of this alternate build comes down to the price, though. The instructions are available on Rebrickable for $3. 31162 Cute Bunny is available now for $19.99. That’s a combined cost of $22.99 instead of the $99.99 needed for 11389 Project Hail Mary.

You’ll need no additional parts, but be aware that 31162 Cute Bunny is due to retire in July at the time of writing. It is also currently out of stock in the UK and on back order in the US.

After sharing this build online, Jordan has shared their reaction to just how viral the model has gone in the Project Hail Mary community.

That might help to explain why 31162 Cute Bunny is facing stock issues months ahead of its planned retirement. UK enthusiasts can at least find the Creator set on Amazon UK for £4 off at the time of writing.

Otherwise, 11389 Project Hail Mary can be yours for £99.99 / $99.99 / €109.99 and we had a lot to say about this model in our review.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
