Retiring LEGO Technic 2025 set guide: buy now, wait for a deal or skip?
LEGO Technic will say goodbye to 18 sets at the end of 2025 at the end of this year, so where should your shopping priorities be?
We might still be several months away from the end of the year, but retiring sets can disappear at anytime before the end of the year if stock runs out. That’s why it’s wise to plan your retiring shopping lists ahead of time, to make sure you avoid any disappointment.
We’ve already run through LEGO Star Wars, Speed Champions, Harry Potter, Icons, and Ideas, and now it’s Technic’s turn for a retiring set guide. For each one, we’ll give our verdict: buy now, wait for a deal, or skip altogether.
42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37

First up is 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37. While the LEGO Technic set is a masterpiece of brick-built engineering, the mighty price tag of £389.99 / $449.99 / €449.99 doesn’t make it an easy recommendation. Indeed, with 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 available for less at third-party retailers like Amazon and Zavvi right now, there’s no need to pay a price that many deem too high, even for the high-quality of the build.
Verdict: Wait for a deal
42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car

With the LEGO Group leaning into Formula 1 this year and likely future ones, motorsports fans who want a full set shouldn’t wait any longer to pick up 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car. It pairs nicely (if not perfectly) with more modern LEGO Technic F1 builds, like 42206 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20 and 42207 Ferrari SF-24 – and for a more manageable price.
Verdict: Buy now
42146 Liebherr Crawler Crane LR 13000

The most expensive and largest LEGO Technic set on the market right now, construction fans certainly won’t be disappointed with 42146 Liebherr Crawler Crane LR 13000. However, the price tag of £579.99 / $699.99 / €679.99 is hard to justify, even for an exemplary marker of what such a large Technic build can achieve. With frequent deals on 42146 Liebherr Crawler Crane LR 13000, save yourself a tidy sum and wait for discounts on what will surely be a rewarding set.
Verdict: Wait for a deal
42156 PEUGEOT 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar

42156 PEUGEOT 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar is fairly priced for a neat recreation of an iconic car, yet you can get better Technic builds with more functions and greater accuracy for the same price. Unless you have a special passion for this car in particular in real life, 42156 PEUGEOT 9X8 24H Le Mans Hybrid Hypercar is one to pass on in favour of better options.
Verdict: Skip
42159 Yamaha MT-10 SP

In a car-heavy theme, 42159 Yamaha MT-10 SP is a breath of fresh air in bringing a motorcycle to the collection – and an impressive one at that. With varied functions and a striking final look, 42159 Yamaha MT-10 SP is well worth picking up before the end of the year, and sooner rather than later.
Verdict: Buy now
42163 Heavy-Duty Bulldozer

At just £8.99 / $12.99 / €9.99, you probably won’t regret buying 42163 Heavy-Duty Bulldozer – but it’s also not anything to write home about. If you’re looking for a neat little gift for someone in your life or want to try Technic out for the first time, you won’t go wrong with this simple build, but otherwise could likely skip it.
Verdict: Skip
42164 Off-Road Race Buggy

Packing more of a punch at a similar price point, 42164 Off-Road Race Buggy catches the eye on the shelf, as well as debuting some surprisingly intricate Technic functions, all bundled in at a very affordable cost. It’s an easy recommendation, and one you don’t need to wait for a discount on.
Verdict: Buy now
42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back

Where LEGO Speed Champions takes form over function for brick-built Formula 1 cars, 42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back manages to achieve both. The final build has all the sleek curves of a Mercedes car, while also exhibiting engaging play functions with the pull-back function. Another easy recommendation.
Verdict: Buy now
42166 NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team

An excellent starter set for younger Technic fans, there’s definitely a market out there for 42166 NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team. However, if you’ve been on the fence about it or haven’t picked it up so far, there are probably more engaging builds with more functionality for the same price – like the aforementioned 42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back, as just one example.
Verdict: Skip
42168 John Deere 9700 Forage Harvester

The complex functions of a combine harvester have been artfully translated into a simple but effective build in 42168 John Deere 9700 Forage Harvester. No piece goes unused here and, if you’re into your agriculture, this is one of the best value builds in that area within the LEGO Technic theme.
Verdict: Buy now
42169 NEOM McLaren Formula E Race Car

With so many motorsports-based LEGO sets on shelves, many of them Technic, it’s hard to stand out – and, unfortunately, 42169 NEOM McLaren Formula E Race Car fails to do so. The double pull-back function is a neat add-on, but it becomes unwieldy in practice. What’s more, the price is just too high for what you get here.
Verdict: Skip
42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht

42174 Emirates Team New Zealand AC75 Yacht is a unique and impressive build, taking to the high seas rather than the open road, the race track, or industrial yards. At £104.99 / $119.99 / €119.99, much of its size comes from the mighty sails, but there’s still plenty of functionality blended in. Nonetheless, discounts are common on this mid-range build, so we reckon you’ll be safe (and happier) keeping your eyes peeled for a discount.
Verdict: Wait for a deal
42178 Surface Space Loader LT78

42178 Surface Space Loader LT78 has the right level of depth, the right price point, and the right focus to make it an easy purchase recommendation. At just £29.99 / $34.99 / €34.99, it’s not going to break the bank, but is an excellent entry point to both Technic and modern Space sets.
Verdict: Buy now
42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover

If you’re after something more in-depth, 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover won’t disappoint, with a working suspension, crane, expanding truck bed, and much more included in the 1,599-piece Technic set. However, for all it includes, the price tag of £129.99 / $149.99 / €149.99 feels a tad too much. Wait for a discount of 20% or so – like what’s already available right now at Very.
Verdict: Wait for a deal
42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81

When it comes to LEGO Technic Space sets and good value, 42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81 is where it’s at. Technic builds might usually be grounded in reality, but this takes off into a space where engineering and creativity can meet in the best possible way – and at a double digit price point that will allow you to feel like you’ve got plenty of bang for your buck.
Verdict: Buy now
42182 NASA Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle – LRV

If you’re parting with £189.99 / $219.99 / €219.99 of your hard-earned cash, you’re going to want a sturdy build that looks good at the end. Sadly, 42182 NASA Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle – LRV doesn’t tick either of those boxes, ending up with a flimsy design that tries to achieve too much. As already noted, there are some far better examples of what Technic can achieve when it experiments with space-themed models.
Verdict: Skip
42184 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut White Hypercar

42184 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut White Hypercar is one of many excellent mid-sized Technic cars that prove you can do a lot with a pretty affordable budget. There’s no real hurry to pick it up (especially as you can get the very same build in a different colour until the end of 2026), but you’ll also feel like you get plenty for your money even if you pay full price.
Verdict: Buy now
42196 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica Orange

The same can be said for 42196 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica Orange. Almost every set from this unofficial sub-theme nails the look of the car, with unique building techniques and Technic functionality to keep each one fresh and interesting. If you really have to pick between them, pick whichever car you prefer the most in real life – the LEGO side will hold up either way.

I completely disagree on 42156 – interesting suspension, the new diffs, and engine and a (fake) electric motor. A really good build.
