Six new LEGO Technic 2024 sets revealed – space, McLaren and more

LEGO Technic is heading out into the stars in 2024 with a wave of original space sets, alongside a new Formula E car and a more affordable motorbike.

One of the freshest LEGO Technic waves in some time is shooting on to shelves in March, bringing with it three sci-fi-like vehicles and an orrery. The latter is a legitimate first for this theme, and includes tiny depictions of the Sun, Earth and Moon – along with what looks like a refreshingly complex mechanism – while the space vehicles are all rocking a brand new shade of orange for 2024.

LEGO Technic fans looking to keep things a little more grounded can swing for either a new McLaren Formula E car or a Kawasaki motorbike, which marks the brand’s debut in the LEGO Group’s most advanced building system. Check out all six new sets – revealed by German retailer JB Spielwaren – below.

42169 NEOM McLaren Formula E Team

Price: €52.99 Pieces: 452 Release date: March 1, 2024

Reminiscent of 2022’s 42141 McLaren Formula 1 Race Car for its orange and blue livery, 42169 NEOM McLaren Formula E Team is a more affordable recreation of the brand’s electric racer, coming in at the same price range as 42153 NASCAR Next Gen Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and 42161 Lamborghini Huracán Tecnica.

42170 Kawasaki Ninja H2R

Price: €79.99 Pieces: 643 Release date: March 1, 2024

If 42130 BMW M 1000 RR and 42159 Yamaha MT-10 SP are beyond your budget, 42170 Kawasaki Ninja H2R may be just the bike for you. Available from March for only €79.99, this first-ever LEGO Kawasaki is closer in scope to 2020’s 42107 Ducati Panigale V4 R, which is retiring in 2023. Like for like, then.

42178 Surface Space Loader LT78

Price: €34.99 Pieces: 435 Release date: March 1, 2024

This is where things start to get really interesting. 42178 Surface Space Loader LT78 is the entry-level set in LEGO Technic’s brand new space subtheme for 2024, bringing to life what looks to be a totally original design by the LEGO Group. Check out those light grey tyres and that brand new orange hue…

42179 Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit

Price: €79.99 Pieces: 526 Release date: March 1, 2024

As it turns out, the tiny orrery in 10326 Natural History Museum was just a tease of something much bigger to come in 42179 Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit. This one-of-a-kind LEGO Technic set represents a true departure for the theme, delivering something we’ve never seen before.

42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover

Price: €149.99 Pieces: 1,599 Release date: March 1, 2024

The LEGO Group is also going big with its new Technic space subtheme in 2024, courtesy of the 1,599-piece 42180 Mars Crew Exploration Rover. This looks packed with functionality from the back of the box, but JB Spielwaren doesn’t have product descriptions up yet, so we’ll have to wait for it to pop up on LEGO.com to learn the full extent of its features.

42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81

Price: €99.99 Pieces: 1,365 Release date: March 1, 2024

Rounding out the space subtheme is the set that perhaps leans most heavily into science-fiction, 42181 VTOL Heavy Cargo Spaceship LT81. With cargo to carry, retractable landing gear and rotating side engines, this is another one that looks heavy on functions – and has a surprisingly reasonable price.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
