Sonic Superstars debuts co-op mode in new trailer

The trailer for the latest 2D side-scrolling Sonic the Hedgehog game was shown off in yesterday’s Nintendo Direct.

Developed by Arzest and Team Sonic, the latest super-fast action platformer in the Sonic series is called Sonic Superstars and will be available this Fall. Players can explore 12 new zones with four different playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose.

This game marks the first time in the Sonic series that 4-player local co-op is available, so you and your friends can jump in as Sonic and friends to play together. All four coloured blurs bouncing around the screen at once is certainly something to look at.

Now that Sonic is getting his own LEGO theme (releasing this August), LEGO fans should start paying more attention to whatever’s the latest from the world of Sonic. You never know what will be the inspiration for the next great Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO set.

This trailer provides a great look at all sorts of new areas and enemies that could be adapted into LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog’s brick-built gamified toys. Also, the inclusion of Knuckles in this game will hopefully make his appearance as a minifigure more likely down the line.

The selection of playable characters in Sonic Superstars does raise an interesting question – will LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets eventually provide speed spheres for Sonic’s friends? Right now, the sphere that builders can place Sonic inside in order to launch him at top speed only comes in one colour: blue. Maybe down the line, speed spheres could come in red, yellow, or pink in order to house Tails, Knuckles, or Amy Rose, respectively.
