Four ways Sonic Superstars is perfect for upcoming LEGO sets and one it’s not

A new Sonic the Hedgehog game has been announced and it looks perfectly aligned with the upcoming sets in multiple ways, except one.

Announced at Summer Game Fest 2023, Sonic Superstars modernises the iconic 2D gameplay of the franchise in a new adventure and it seems to have a few coincidental similarities to the upcoming LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets

Five LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog models are coming later this year with four on August 1 and a fifth with an unknown release date at the time of writing. The focus on the Blue Blur seems to be heavy in 2023 and fans of the franchise may be excited for both the new builds and the latest game.

To help tide you over, here are a few connections between the upcoming sets and Sonic Superstars we spotted.

5 – Release dates

Sonic Superstars is releasing in autumn 2023 and the LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets release on August 1, or at least four of them do. August 1, 2023, is the start of the final month before autumn and while no specific release date has been revealed, that puts them only one month apart at least.

4 – Characters and minifigures

Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Dr. Eggman are all featured in Sonic Superstars and all but Knuckles have minifigures in the five Sonic the Hedgehog models. Admittedly, Amy uses her classic design in the game rather than her modern look, which is used in 76992 Amy’s Animal Rescue Island and 76994 Sonic’s Green Hill Zone Loop Challenge. However, those who sign up for the newsletter can unlock this design in-game.

3 – Stages and sets

Sonic Superstars seems to cover a wide variety of locations beyond Green Hill Zone as the game is stepping away from the classic course. Green Hill Zone is the only area to be featured in LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog theme so far.

2 – Gameplay and functions

The fast-paced, mostly 2D gameplay of Sonic Superstars matches with the LEGO sets with most of the obstacles being in a single line to best fit the Speed Sphere feature. The game also has multiplayer, matching the multiple launchers across the theme’s models.

1 – Multiple Sonics

Those who purchase all five LEGO Sonic the Hedgehog sets will have four Sonic minifigures, which is three more than you arguably need. Thankfully, Sonic Superstars has a solution with a new ability to summon clones of the Blue Blur. There are a lot more than four, but you can at least grab one more in 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
