Spider-Punk confirmed for appearance in the next Spider-Man movie

Animated movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is adding unusual hero Spider-Punk to its ranks, reflecting the movie’s exciting potential.

To some animation and superhero fans, the most exciting movie on the horizon is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. This 3D animated film is a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse appeared in cinemas back in 2018, which focussed on Miles Morales: an Afro-Latino teenager that takes up the mantle of Spider-Man. In addition to Morales, the movie starred Spider-heroes from other worlds, with the likes of Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Ham joining Miles on his adventures.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sends Miles on a new journey, with a reported 240 different characters appearing in it. While a few have already been unmasked, we now know the identity of another: Spider-Punk, a relatively new superhero introduced back in 2015. Within the original comics his real identity is Hobart Brown, and he’s an enemy of President Norman Osborn – who Brown bludgeons to death with a guitar. He’s being voiced by Daniel Kaluuya, who’s known for his appearances in films such as Get Out, Black Panther and Kick-Ass 2.

While this is intriguing on its own merits, it also has some potential relevance for the LEGO Marvel theme. That’s because a number of recent LEGO Spider-Man sets have been tie-ins for other Spider-Man media, even if they aren’t explicitly marketed as such. The new large-scale Marvel figures (such as 76225 Miles Morales Figure) can all be found in the upcoming Spider-Man game, for instance.

Moreover, various characters from Into the Spider-Verse have already appeared in LEGO form. Spider-Gwen, Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Ham all earned LEGO minifigures in years past, as did Spider-Man 2099 – who made a very brief appearance in Into the Spider-Verse’s after-credits scene.

As the selection of Spider-heroes continues to expand, it’s to be hoped that at least some will trickle down to the LEGO Marvel theme. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to appear in American cinemas from June 2, 2023 – and at least two films in the same continuity are scheduled to follow it. As such, there’s plenty for the LEGO Marvel theme to draw from in the years ahead.

If you can’t bear to wait that long, you can find a selection of Spider-Man sets over on LEGO.com. Miles Morales’s best Spider-Man figure is also available in a recently-published LEGO magazine, although (if you’re outside of Europe) a set like 10781 Miles Morales: Spider-Man’s Techno Trike may be more accessible.
