The Spidersona star of the LEGO Spider-Verse minifigures

Of the 12 new minifigures in LEGO 71050 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, there’s a standout star thanks to the fan-driven Spidersona trend.

The reveal of LEGO 71050 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is exciting for many Marvel enthusiasts, but for one particular artist, this series has something special. Of the 12 minifigures in the series, one started life as a fan design.

Comic book writer and designer Dayn Broder designed Sun-Spider as a Spidersona during the 2018 trend that ran on various social media platforms, and she stood out for using crutches, proving that anyone can wear the mask.

The outpouring of love for Sun-Spider eventually saw Marvel adapt her and more fan-submitted Spidersona characters officially with the help of their fan creators. This was originally done as part of the first issue 2019 Spider-Verse comic, but Sun-Spider’s story doesn’t stop there.

Sun-Spider would go on to be the star of a short story in Edge of Spider-Verse issue 4 in 2022, written by Tee Franklin, focusing on what makes Sun-Spider’s story unique and the challenges she faces with her disability, as well as how she overcomes and is empowered by them. This short story preceded her first cinematic appearance in 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse movie, where she even had a small speaking role and was voiced by Danielle Perez.

“In the theatre, I screamed in excitement,” Sun-Spider’s creator Dayn said in an interview with Whizz Kids. “I was shocked and overwhelmed, to be honest. I never expected her to be in the movie. I’ve been an advocate for more disability representation in media for a long time, and decided to create a disabled hero that I could see myself in.

“While I created Sun-Spider, the character of Charlotte Webber was really co-created by Tee Franklin, the writer of the short story solo adventure. Tee and I discussed my thoughts and vision of what Charlotte’s personality and world might look like, and she took that and ran with it, creating a fleshed-out character and world. Charlotte is a high schooler and an ambulatory wheelchair user. She also has EDS, and she has a desperate crush on her best friend Aster.”

Now, Sun-Spider’s small but significant role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has inspired the LEGO Group to include this fan-designed character in 71050 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and we can’t recall another minifigure quite like this.

LEGO Collectible Minifigures 71050 Spider Man Across the Spider Verse 1024x847

It’s common for LEGO Ideas sets to feature the fan designers as minifigures, but those are only in original builds so far. Appearances of real fans or fan-designed characters as minifigures in licensed LEGO sets are unheard of to our knowledge. Sun-Spider in 71050 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is a one-of-a-kind minifigure, and we can only hope that Dayn manages to get their hands on it next month.

71050 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse launches on September 1 for £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99 per boxed minifigure. You can use Brick Search’s best-ever minifigure scanner to find all 12 minifigures with ease. Download Brick Search for Android or iOS and use the minifigure box scanner for this new minifigure series, assuming they have the same scannable codes as previous series.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
