Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is still in the mix at Lucasfilm

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that the planned Star Wars: Rogue Squadron movie is still in the mix – but may not end up on screens the way you think.

Originally slated to debut theatrically in late 2023, the Rogue Squadron movie was pulled from Disney’s release schedule in September 2022, apparently due to director Patty Jenkins’ commitments elsewhere. The fighter pilot film was set to focus on ‘a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings’, Kennedy said when the project was first announced in 2020.

While Rogue Squadron may or may not be happening under Jenkins, however, Kennedy says that the concept is very much on the minds of Lucasfilm’s executives. “Rogue Squadron, that definitely is something that we still talk about,” she told IGN – before revealing that it could shift from big to small screen before release. “Whether it’s a movie, or whether it ends up being in the series space, that’s definitely something.”

With three new Star Wars movies confirmed at Star Wars Celebration over the weekend, and multiple series much closer to fruition – including The Acolyte, Ahsoka and Andor Season 2 – we probably shouldn’t expect to see anything of Rogue Squadron for a good few years yet. But if and when the project does get its own wings, we can probably look forward to plenty more brand new LEGO X-wings on shelves.

In the meantime, 75355 X-wing Starfighter launches on May 1 as the third Ultimate Collector Series X-wing. For a more affordable rendition of the iconic rebel ship, there’s always 75301 Luke Skywalker’s X-wing Fighter.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
