Taking LEGO Icons 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 into the wild

10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 is built to conquer rough ground, so we’ve taken the LEGO Icons set into the wild for an all-terrain photoshoot.

For our review of 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90, we chose to get down and dirty with all kinds of terrain to showcase the iconic vehicle in its natural habitat. As well as the four photos featured in our in-depth review, it seems a shame not to share the many other photographs, exploring just how well the LEGO Icons model works on all kinds of terrain.

Between its sleek and expedition modes and the various customisation options included, we set out to find a variety of locations to properly exhibit 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90. From forests to local parks and a kind business offering their Land Rovers for the photoshoot, here’s the rest of our 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 review photos.

Rocky terrain

Our first thought for a photoshoot location for 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 was a forested area with plenty of rocks and generally rough terrain to see exactly how the LEGO Icons model fared. As part of an extended photoshoot day, we found the perfect place with an abundance of rocks, ivy and plants.

10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 fared well in this environment, despite the weight of the back door causing it to open when at an angle. Trialling the various angles with a mix of plants in the foreground and background made for some interesting images and this was by far the best test of the set’s suspension throughout our photoshoots.

On an expedition

With the sun shining in the sky, a nearby field in a local park was another ideal location for 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90. This time we opted for expedition mode to see how the bright colours contrasted with the natural sky and looked in bright light outside of a studio setting.

Lying down with a camera in the grass naturally caught the interests of passersby, who asked where to obtain the set and recommended we buy the real thing instead. That might be slightly outside of our budget, but we’re pleased with how the photos came out, as the colour scheme works well in the sun and is sure to draw a crowd.

The real deal

Courtesy of Taylor’s 4×4 in Chester, we were able to see how 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 stacks up compared to a real Defender. To no one’s surprise, it’s not quite as big – but otherwise, it’s impressive to see how closely the shaping has been captured.

From balancing the LEGO Icons set on the wheel, these shots offer an interesting comparison to the vehicle it’s based on, albeit not with quite the same colour scheme. However, as we were wrapping up the photoshoot, we found another Land Rover Classic Defender that the team at Taylor’s 4×4 let us use.

Days gone by

Unexpectedly, some of our favourite shots from the various photoshoots were with a dilapidated Land Rover Classic Defender. Its look might not have improved with age but the rusted aesthetic contrasts excellently with the sleek and perfect appearance of 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90.

After another few angles and a moment of peril where the LEGO set almost fell into the engine thanks to a strong gust of wind, the photoshoots were complete and everything was ready for our in-depth 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 review, which is available to read now.

10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 is out now for £209.99 / $239.99 / €239.99, and includes 2,336 pieces.
