Terrifying LEGO Star Wars Yoda faces: a ranking
There’s a new terrifying LEGO Star Wars Yoda face on the block, but how does it stack up next to previous terrifying LEGO Star Wars Yoda faces?
Yoda is, if nothing else, a tough nut to crack in LEGO. But that hasn’t stopped the LEGO Star Wars team from trying, and over the decades, we’ve had plenty of LEGO Yoda visages to litter our shelves and keep us awake at night. The latest of those is 75438 Yoda Bust, a brand new terrifying Yoda face that’s on the way next month – so here’s how it slots in next to the rest, at least at face value (sorry not sorry)…
9 – The current Yoda minifigure

Yoda’s current LEGO Star Wars minifigure head has been in circulation since 2013, and by all accounts, it’s the least terrifying version of this character we’ve ever seen. Somehow simultaneously encompassing the wise and mature features of the Jedi Master in the prequels and his somewhat madcap persona in The Empire Strikes Back, it’s fair to say the LEGO Star Wars team nailed it with this one. But just this one…
8 – 41627 Luke Skywalker & Yoda

This BrickHeadz Yoda came along in 2018, and sits lower on this list partly by virtue of how few parts it uses. There’s just not a lot of room for a sense of genuine dread to seep in. But the soulless eyes of the BrickHeadz sets generally speaking is enough to earn it a spot, even if that’s not necessarily a Yoda-specific issue.
7 – The Clone Wars Yoda minifigure

Fair’s fair: pretty much all the LEGO Star Wars Clone Wars minifigure faces were terrifying, so what hope did Yoda have? If anything, the non-human characters were actually a little less distracting, so we can’t criticise this version of the little green guy too heavily – especially considering what a step up it was on the original Yoda minifigure. You’ll notice that one hasn’t featured in this list yet…
6 – Young Jedi Adventures Yoda minifigure

With its exceedingly cartoonish design, the Young Jedi Adventures Yoda is designed to appeal to a much younger crowd than most of LEGO Star Wars. It somehow skirts the line between looking ancient and childish at the same time, for which it should probably be commended. That doesn’t make it any less unsettling, though.
5 – 7194 Yoda

Is terrifying the right way to describe the O.G. brick-built Yoda? In a fashion. The blocky aesthetic captures his head pretty well all told, especially for the time, but there’s something about his eyes, nose and mouth that just looks too… human. Like if your kid drew a picture of Yoda and added two dots and a line for his face. It’s not going to haunt your dreams, but it sure isn’t Yoda.
4 – 75255 Yoda

The first LEGO Star Wars Yoda to make us all stop and think ‘maybe this is one character that just shouldn’t be attempted in LEGO’, 75255 Yoda leans into the variety of sloped elements that were available by 2019 to take a better crack at his head. And, fair play, it is a lot more accurate to the puppet… until you get to the eyes. Stare into them too long, and you might find yourself absent of your marbles and wandering around a swamp getting into fights with seagulls.
Of course, the real irony of this one is that swapping in the BrickHeadz eyes actually makes a massive difference to how terrifying it is…
3 – 5006623 Yoda Plush

Has any Star Wars character suffered so badly from the merchandising machinery as Yoda? Even in plush form, he’s not safe, looking either more like a weird gremlin or goblin, or – like 7194 Yoda – maybe just a little bit too normal. Hard to put a finger on this one, but you definitely wouldn’t want it staring at you from across the room while you’re trying to sleep.
2 – The O.G. Yoda minifigure

What if you took Yoda’s head, but then rubbed all the printing and colour off it so it was just an amorphous sand green blob? Yes, it’s the original LEGO Yoda minifigure from 2002, a time before the LEGO Group had figured out how to print on rubber elements. To be fair, the physical details do capture Yoda quite well, and maybe – just maybe – you could imagine this is him with his eyes closed. But if you can’t… it’s pretty terrifying.
1 – 75438 Yoda Bust

Let’s face it: you knew what was going to top this list before we even started. In its defence, 75438 Yoda Bust has a relatively meagre number of pieces to work with, and from the neck down, it’s actually pretty great. But a bust by definition needs to be more than just ‘the neck down’, and it’s hard to call Yoda’s face here anything other than straight up terrifying.
But who knows? Maybe the community will find a fix for this one like they did for the 2019 model. Until then, you’ll have to contend with 75438 Yoda Bust as it comes in the box. It’s due to go on sale alongside 75439 Darth Vader Bust from April 26 for £34.99 / $39.99 / €39.99.

Honestly I think the O.G Yoda head looks the most like Yoda (OT version) than anything else on the list – just a shame there’s no printing.
