The LEGO Ideas 90th anniversary second round fan vote is over

The second round of voting to find a retro theme to celebrate the LEGO Group’s 90th anniversary has now closed.

BIONICLE, Classic Space, Pirates and Castle are all in contention, having taken the top three positions in the first round of voting (or, in Castle’s case, only missed out through having its subthemes fragmented across the poll).

According to the LEGO Ideas team, ‘tens of thousands’ of fans voted in the grand final, although the specific number who took part will remain a mystery for now. Unlike the original poll, this one wasn’t transparent, preventing savvy fans from calculating the results.

To that end, we also won’t know which theme actually came out on top until 2022, when the LEGO Group announces its 90th anniversary set. That’s apparently in the interests of keeping it a ‘surprise for everyone’, but – with our cynic’s hat on – could also be the LEGO Group weighing up all four options to see which one would work best for a one-off set.

After all, the original wording of the 90th anniversary polls suggested that the final positions of each theme in this second-round poll wouldn’t influence the company’s decision over which one to resurrect: “One of these three [now four] themes will be what the 90th anniversary set will be based on, but we still want to know what the most popular of the final three is!”

Either way, it means we already know at least one set in store for 2022, and it’s going to make a lot of people very happy. Whether those are BIONICLE, Classic Space, Pirates or Castle fans remains to be seen.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.

I hope it will be Bionicle because Bionicle has been absent for too long. If Bionicle is a winning choice, I hope the project will convince Lego to bring back Bionicle’s glory days, bring back Hero Factory, finish up Bionicle’s G1 story and HF’s story, and have them share the same universe.
