The Super Mario Bros. Movie has officially grossed $1 billion

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s latest box office achievement suggests that it’s a success but still with no LEGO sets based on the film.

According to Variety, TheSuper MarioBros. Movie has officially grossed $1 billion with $490 million in the US and $532 million internationally. That makes it the 11th highest-grossing animated movie of all time. It’s no small feat, especially during the coronavirus pandemic and suggests that the video game film is a hit.

The movie has no LEGO sets specifically based on it at the time of writing with the LEGO Group potentially failing to capitalise on its success. However, staff at LEGO stores have been eager to tie displays to the film using 71411 The Mighty Bowserand21323 Grand Piano.

LEGO Super Mario is expanding with a Donkey Kong range later this year, possibly timing with the titular character featuring heavily in the movie.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
