There’s only one team in the world of LEGO Football, apparently

A new football-focused LEGO set recycles old parts, which might be great for the design process but proves disappointing for fans.

The newly-revealed 40634 Icons of Play includes half a football pitch and five football players among its 15 total minifigures. However, four of the players are dressed in the same team’s kitchen, opposite just one member of an opposing team with the pink-clad goalie. The lack of more players or a different coloured kit means that, even if you buy two of the set at £89.99 to create a full pitch (as we would suggest), you’ll still be missing fresh uniforms to make two five-a-side teams stand apart from one another.

40634 Icons of Play includes working play features, so it appears that the LEGO designers were intending for builders to play football games once the set is built – which makes the lack of a real opposing team still more disappointing. The latest LEGO Football set uses the same minifigure parts as 21337 Table Football, namely the red team’s kits and the pink goalie kit from the blue team.

The minifigures are based on real-life football players, including Megan Rapinoe, Yuki Nagasato, Asisat Oshoala, and Sam Kerr, and it could have been a fun opportunity to include kit from the players’ actual teams (or as close as you can get). That. would have meant white for Rapinoe, white or light blue for Yuki Nagasato, red and blue for Asisat Oshoala, and yellow for Sam Kerr. Essentially, a lot more colour range than the simple red.

After all, if the LEGO Group wants 40634 Icons of Play to inspire young women and girls as part of its Play Unstoppable campaign, offering more freedom for football fans to see their team or display more accurate matches can only help people get more invested in the set and the campaign.

If you already own 21337 Table Football, you could use some minifigures from that to flesh out 40634 Icons of Play. If not, you might need to let your imagination do the work for you.

Looking at the figures included for the crowd in this set, there are in-fact 2 blue-team outfits, plus the orange goalkeeper, so a swap around of minifigure parts could in theory provide a 3v3 setup (Though only providing one goal). Two copies of the set for a complete pitch therefore could provide a 5v5 setup.
