LEGO Football 40634 Icons of Play includes an appropriate play feature

There’s a fun play feature tucked away within the upcoming LEGO Football 40634 Icons of Play set, one that’s appropriate for the sports-based set.

Thanks to a Japanese LEGO Certified Store, we got our first look today at an upcoming build that will arrive in time for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament. LEGO Football 40634 Icons of Play is an 899-piece model that comes with half a pitch, a goal, a spectator stand and 15 minifigures.

The latter are based on real-life footballers Megan Rapinoe, Yuki Nagasato, Asisat Oshoala and Sam Kerr. The set is listed as launching on June 6 priced at 16,480 yen, which is roughly £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99. LEGO Football 40634 Icons of Play is likely to be a LEGO.com and LEGO Store exclusive, but we’ll have more information as soon as the official reveal arrives.

In the meantime, we’ve spotted a handful of features in the sports-based set, with one in particular being both fun and appropriate for the model. A short promotional video on the retailer’s site shows LEGO Football 40634 Icons of Play in action, with a goalkeeper that can be moved left and right to block shots and a scoreboard with numbers that can be changed as the match progresses.

In addition, the spectator stand includes a clever mechanism that’s operated by a crank handle on the side of the build. When rotated, it simulates the movement of the fans standing up and cheering their teams on, just like at a real game. It’s a simple but effective touch, one that adds some degree of functionality to LEGO Football 40634 Icons of Play beyond having to move players around by hand.

I think this looks great, I imagine trying to update my Lego Football 3409 with the parts. There is at least a whole new team for it there!
