Three lessons LEGO needs to learn for a $300 Family set to succeed
The LEGO Group is expected to make a bold choice in its growing LEGO Family collection, but there are some must-haves for the risk to pay off.
So far, the LEGO Group has released two sets in the LEGO Family collection: 41838 Travel Moments and 41839 Message Board. Both debuted to lukewarm reactions at best but that seemingly hasn’t stopped the LEGO Group from planning a third in the sub-theme, according to the latest rumours.
According to rumours from Clay_Bricks on Reddit via BrickMerge, a set known only as 41843 is said to come out this October, retailing at $299.99 for a whopping 3,171 pieces. It’s certainly a bold move to up the ante in terms of both size and price after two poorly received sets (at least in the public eye) and there are some obvious lessons that should be apparent as this collection goes.
For 41843 to do well, fans will be hoping that some criticisms for the first two sets have been addressed.
Customisation shouldn’t come at such a high cost

First and foremost, the price. For $300, fans expect to get a lot of bang for their buck – and not just in piece count. Builders expect unique building techniques, interactive features, and immaculate display possibilities. Just look at the reception of 10354 The Lord of the Rings: The Shire for evidence, where fans were disheartened to see side builds and open-back concepts.
The first two LEGO Family sets were both criticised in terms of price, not least because both had various leftover pieces. While that feeds into the customisation options of the set – seemingly a staple of the sub-theme – it leaves a large part of the piece count unused, but still paid for.
A $300 LEGO Family set needs to feel like it’s worth the extra cash. Without knowing what the set will be, it’s hard to know what that could look like. What we do know is that it shouldn’t look like unused bricks, lacklustre display options, or repetitive build techniques.
Family-friendly doesn’t have to mean boring

Looking at 41839 Message Board in particular, the set got a lot of criticism for being bland and boring. Brick-built letters could be fun and engaging but keeping them all beige and plain doesn’t exactly scream fun and creative.
With that in mind, here’s hoping that the LEGO Group packs more of a punch when it comes to the bigger and more expensive third set. The logic of it needing to be more plain to appeal to a different audience – young women or first-time LEGO builders – doesn’t quite hold when you look at what does perform in those same groups.
LEGO Botanicals sets use some of the most unique building techniques out there, packed full of colour and creativity. It feels like 41839 Message Board was attempting to capitalise on some of that same audience – so why remove so much of what makes the Botanicals so great?
In with the new, out with the old

In the same vein, trying to draw on a new market doesn’t mean you need to abandon other markets too. LEGO Family might be trying to reach an entire family, rather than focus on long-term LEGO fans, but finding ways to appeal to both would surely be the most unifying achievement.
Those who have been building LEGO sets for years might well be intrigued to buy and build a set with friends and family members who have never touched a LEGO brick. Instead of focusing on one or the other, why not combine the two into a set that straddles both markets?
41838 Travel Moments nearly nailed that, with a concept that would appeal to first-time builders who want a customisable display for their home, but fell down on delivering on price. 41839 Message Board is similarly not a bad idea; its execution simply lacked zest.
Perhaps the souped-up piece count and price for the $300 build will be what the LEGO Family set needs to truly deliver a LEGO set for the whole family.
