What does the Venator’s rumoured size tell us about the flagship LEGO Star Wars 2023 set?

This year’s LEGO Star Wars flagship set is rumoured to be a Venator-class Star Destroyer, coming in at just over a metre in length – but what does that size tell us about the Ultimate Collector Series set?

One of the only LEGO Star Wars sets yet to be revealed for 2023 is the theme’s second Ultimate Collector Series model, which history tells us is likely to be its biggest of the year. 75331 The Razor Crest and 75313 AT-AT both took that crown in 2022 and 2021 respectively, and the rumour mill suggests this year’s flagship set will be a UCS take on the prequel-era Venator-class Star Destroyer.

According to fresh details from brick_clicker, the model will weigh in at around 40 inches long, which is equivalent to 101.6cm. While that might seem like one minor piece of the overall puzzle that is 75367 Venator (or whatever its final name ends up being – if it exists at all), it actually tells us much more about the rumoured LEGO Star Wars set than you might expect.

It wouldn’t be the longest LEGO Star Wars set yet…

At 101cm long (we’re rounding, because the LEGO Group will probably call it ‘over 101cm in length’), there are two more LEGO Star Wars sets that would beat the Venator along the horizontal axis. The first is 2019’s 75252 Imperial Star Destroyer, the set that any UCS Venator would likely ape in design – to a degree, but more on that further down – and which comes in at 110cm long.

The second is 2011’s 10221 Super Star Destroyer, which measures 124.5cm in length, and still holds the crown of the longest LEGO Star Wars set of all time. A tiny (and much shorter) version is currently available in 75356 Executor Super Star Destroyer.

…and there are four other sets greater in length, too

Looking beyond a galaxy far, far away, 75367 Venator would fall squarely in the middle of our list of the longest LEGO sets of all time. Pipping it by a single centimetre (give or take a few millimetres) are 75978 Diagon Alley and 10214 Tower Bridge, both of which measure 102cm long.

LEGO Harry Potter 76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition would also trump the Venator at 118cm in length (that buildable track does a lot of heavy lifting there), while 10294 Titanic is still the longest LEGO set ever released at 135cm. Beyond taking a future UCS Star Destroyer to the £1,000 mark, it’s difficult to see any Star Wars set topping the ocean liner.

It’s probably going to be bulkier than the Star Destroyer

75367 Venator coming in shorter than 75252 Imperial Star Destroyer actually tracks with the shape of the two vessels in-universe: where the original trilogy cruiser is a complete triangular wedge, the prequel-era flagship has a flat nose and cut-outs in its sides. That’s a lot more negative space to contend with, and likely explains why the newer set is supposedly just slightly shorter than its predecessor.

But the 2023 model is actually rumoured to include a whopping 5,374 pieces – or 590 more than the Star Destroyer’s 4,784 bricks. All that plastic needs to go somewhere, so chances are the Venator will actually be a good deal bulkier than its predecessor. Whether that equates to much of an interior (the Star Destroyer is essentially a bunch of panels attached to a Technic frame) remains to be seen.

The scale is way off next to the Star Destroyer

One thing the Venator won’t be – if the rumoured length is correct – is to scale with 75252 Imperial Star Destroyer. The 2019 set measures 110cm long, while the in-universe flagship measures roughly 1,600m in length, putting the scale of the LEGO model at, erm, 16,000:11. (110cm is an awkward length.)

The Venator-class Star Destroyer, meanwhile, is apparently 1,155m long. At just over a metre in length, the LEGO Star Wars version is therefore at a scale of around 1,155:1. You don’t need to be a master of fractions to realise that the Venator would therefore be hugely oversized compared to LEGO Star Destroyer, so anyone fortunate enough to have enough space to display the two sets side-by-side will need to accept that they won’t quite reflect their respective in-universe differences.

That’s likely a pretty niche segment of the market for an Ultimate Collector Series LEGO Star Wars Venator, though.

Remember: all details concerning the UCS Venator, including its length, are just rumours for now – and that means they shouldn’t be taken as gospel until we get official confirmation from the LEGO Group. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
