What a $40 LEGO Star Wars battle pack needs to deliver on

LEGO Star Wars battle packs have been creeping up in price and, if rumours are true, a 2025 battle pack will see another price hike.

When LEGO Star Wars battle packs first hit shelves, the early ones, like 7655 Clone Troopers Battle Pack and 7654 Droids Battle Pack in 2007, were priced at £8.99 in the UK and $9.99 in the US. Those prices have slowly crept up over the last 18 years and 2024 saw the release of 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack, priced at three times the price of the original battle packs at £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99.

Admittedly, 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack includes almost three times as many pieces than the 2007 ones, along with more minifigures. However, the increased prices mean that battle packs are arguably straying away from their original purpose: providing a good value source of minifigures for army building.

To build out large-scale Star Wars battles, you need a wealth of clones, Storm Trooper, and/or droid minifigures to fill out the field. Battle packs were once a cheap way to get minifigures and side builds that can fill out a field alongside larger sets. When prices creep up, you get fewer battle packs for your money and it makes it harder to pack out a LEGO Star Wars display.

Looking ahead to 2025, the rumoured 75431 327th Star Corps Battle Pack is said to cost $39.99 for 258 pieces. That’s only 50 pieces more than 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack for a $10 price increase, if the rumour proves to be true. Although the name suggests it could mark the return of some rare Clone Troopers, it’s still hard to justify that price – and there are a few things we’ll definitely need to see for it be worth the $40 price tag.

Quality and quantity in the minifigures

Perhaps it goes without saying but we’re going to need an updated and top-quality version of the yellow, black and white 327th Star Corps Clone Trooper. That includes accurate helmet printing, leg printing, and some signifier of rank on at least one minifigure. We’ll also want to see Clone Commander Bly as a minifigure for the very first time. An exclusive newcomer will go a long way to making this set warrant a $40 price tag.

It’s possible it could also include Jedi General Aayla Secura but that would once again stray away from the purpose of battle packs. After all, 75359 332nd Ahsoka’s Clone Trooper Battle Pack doesn’t include Ahsoka herself, as otherwise army building with multiple copies of the pack would leave you with an overload of Ahsokas. Unless Star Wars canon changes to reveal that Jedi were also being cloned, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

Representing both sides of a battle

75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack works particularly well for fleshing out a Clone Wars-era display because it features both droids and clones. That means you can build out both sides of a battle in one go, making it a more useful addition to a brick-built scene.

In the case of 75431 327th Star Corps Battle Pack, they also primarily fought the Separatist droid legions, meaning this could be another chance for the updated Super Battle Droids design to be included. We pointed out in our review of 75372 Clone Trooper & Battle Droid Battle Pack that the battle droids are also long overdue for an upgrade – and a $40 battle pack is the prime opportunity to do so.

A substantial build

While battle packs shine a spotlight on minifigures, for $40 we’re going to need a substantial build as well. Typically, this would be some sort of war machine or vehicle for the minifigures to use – although if the LEGO Star Wars designers really wanted to hit us in the feels, they could also choose to feature some detailed scenery from Felucia, the place where Aayla Secura was killed by the 327th Star Corps during Order 66.

The huge bulbous plants of the jungle would make for some interesting scenery, although they wouldn’t be quite as versatile or practical as more general war machinery builds.

Of course, we won’t know for sure whether 75431 327th Star Corps Battle Pack is on the way until we get official confirmation from the LEGO Group. For now, here’s a reminder of everything that could be in store for LEGO Star Wars fans in 2025.

I write about all the very best fandoms – and that means LEGO, of course. Spending so much time looking at and talking about LEGO sets is dangerous for my bank balance, but the LEGO shelves are thriving. You win some, you lose some.
