What could come next for LEGO Transformers?

LEGO Transformers will return with 10358 Soundwave, building on the foundation of 10302 Optimus Prime and 10338 Bumblebee – but what’s next?

With LEGO Icons bringing out a brick-built Decepticon for the very first time next month with 10358 Soundwave, the rate of LEGO Transformers is increasing. Where 10302 Optimus Prime came out in 2022, followed by a two-year wait for 10338 Bumblebee, we only had to wait one year for 10358 Soundwave.

Could this mean we could get another LEGO Transformers as early as next year – or even sooner? What could it look like? Here’s a closer look at the possible future of LEGO Transformers, with the caveat that this is pure speculation for now.

LEGO BrickHeadz Soundwave

A compact slam dunk would be to catch LEGO BrickHeadz up on the latest Transformers addition to the LEGO system. Both LEGO Icons sets got miniaturised Transformers in BrickHeadz form, so it just makes sense for us to get Soundwave as well. After all, just imagine how cute that shrunk down cassette tape would look in the blocky style.

Literally any other Deception

There are two Autobots, which means there surely should be two Decepticons. While it feels unlikely we’ll ever get Megatron, due to his tendency to be stocked up with guns and even turn into one, but others could work in LEGO form.

Shockwave, for example, turns into a tank, which isn’t far off from many LEGO Star Wars vehicles, while Starscream turns into a fighter jet, which also feels safe enough for the LEGO Group’s guidelines. While Soundwave is a clear fan favourite, he looks lonely facing down both Prime and Bumblebee; he needs back-up.

Is LEGO dropping clues?

While we’ve been dealing in pure speculation so far, there is some evidence to go on as well. Social media clues seem to suggest that Grapple and Ratchet could be next to get the LEGO treatment. Of course, those nods to the characters could just be Easter eggs for fans to enjoy – but why those two Autobots and not others?

If those two are both on the way, then that would suggest that LEGO Transformers are ramping up in speed. Perhaps, seeing as those two don’t have the same large fan bases as Prime, Bumblebee, and Soundwave, the LEGO Group is planning to debut smaller and less detailed versions of those Transformers. Being simpler to produce and cheaper to buy, this could allow for a more rapid rate of launch, debuting more characters faster. It could even lead to the launch of a whole new theme, in the same way that Botanicals graduated from under the Icons umbrella.

Naturally, this is all just speculation for now. There’s nothing to suggest that the LEGO Group isn’t just stopping here, with three brick-built Transformers. With the positive response to 10358 Soundwave, though, it feels like that would be leaving money on the table.
