What does LEGO Harry Potter’s new Diagon Alley set mean for the modular model?

There’s a new LEGO Harry Potter Diagon Alley set coming at a more affordable price, potentially spelling trouble for 75978 Diagon Alley

75978 Diagon Alley released in 2020 as one of the biggest LEGO Harry Potter sets ever designed. Now in summer 2023, we’re awaiting the launch of 76422 Diagon Alley: Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. We’ve already compared the two models and noted the similarities and differences.

However, the 2023 set could have a major impact on 75978 Diagon Alley and any potential future modular Diagon Alley builds.

75978 Diagon Alley misses a few important inclusions on the street such as Gringotts, Knockturn Alley and the Leaky Cauldron. Another modular Diagon Alley entry could finish off the street, though nothing has been officially confirmed.

Now, with the reveal of 76422 Diagon Alley: Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, the LEGO Group could be opting for a more affordable method of recreating Diagon Alley. 76422 Diagon Alley: Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes has built-in expansion spots with Technic axle connection points (of which only one is used in the set).

This could allow for easier expansion of this new iteration of LEGO Diagon Alley. However, it would take quite a few sets to get to the same point as 75978 Diagon Alley. For the time being, the modular Diagon Alley might not be replaced soon, though the news of 76422 Diagon Alley: Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes might affect the chances of any future expansions.

The rumoured 76417 Gringotts Bank, which has yet to be officially confirmed, could be to scale with 75978 Diagon Alley or 76422 Diagon Alley: Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, and the possible result may decide the future of the modular Diagon Alley’s potential.

76422 Diagon Alley: Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes launches on June 1, 2023, for £84.99 / $89.99 / €94.99 and is up for pre-order now.
