LEGO City is rumoured to be heading to the jungle in 2024 and its last outing debuted several new LEGO animals, leaving less ground to cover.
Rumour has it, according to 1414falconfan, that a LEGO City range coming in summer 2024 will return to the jungle, seven years after the theme's previous trip to the biome. It's reportedly going to be joined by LEGO Friends and the ranges are said to include new animal elements.
For comparison, LEGO City's 2017 jungle subtheme included a new large cat piece used for several species including a tiger, leopard and panther as well as a carnivorous plant to feast on roaming insects. That cat element has been used in multiple sets since and has been the basis for other LEGO animals including a lion and a sabretooth tiger.
In the wider animal kingdom, as well as specific species found in jungles, there's still a lot of ground left for specialised LEGO animal pieces to cover.
Existing elements
Some of the many remaining animals have been recreated with specific elements before, but a second attempt may be worthwhile.
Gorillas are one of the most iconic animals that can be found in jungles. The LEGO Group has three existing kinds of LEGO gorillas, though neither is perfect.
The Collectible Minifigures gorilla costume is just that with a specialised head piece. LEGO DC's Gorilla Grodd bigfig is too big compared to a normal gorilla and Legend of Chima's gorilla tribe minifigures are too anthropomorphic, similar to the Collectible Minifigures' entry.
It might be time for a new, more realistic LEGO gorilla and the rumoured 2024 subtheme could be the ideal way to introduce one.
Similarly, DUPLO has debuted a hippopotamus and there also exists a mini-doll-scale sloth, orangutan and capybara. The sloth is the only piece of this trio that theoretically could be reused but with different printing. Otherwise, compatibility with LEGO City sets and accuracy may necessitate new elements.
Entirely new animals
The existing array of LEGO animals aren't the only creatures that could do with an element as several species won't quite work with any previously-released pieces. Some worth highlighting include tapirs and more as well as several insects.
Tapirs, red pandas and even insects including bigger species of ants and beetles need minifigure-scale pieces and more insects could help to diversify LEGO terrariums with more than just spiders, scorpions and butterflies. Many of these examples have been depicted as builds before, but they're simply too big compared to minifigures to be accurate.
While there may appear to be plenty of LEGO animals across various themes, there's still quite a lot of ground to cover for the two rumoured jungle ranges in 2024. These are still only rumours at the time of writing and should be taken with caution.
