Where to buy retired LEGO sets

Just as the world keeps moving forward, so too do LEGO sets and eventually, every model will retire, but you can still buy retired LEGO sets.

You might have heard about retiring LEGO sets but are stuck as to how LEGO sets can retire and what benefits they can claim once they stop working. That’s not quite how retirement works for LEGO sets and though the concept may seem confusing, it should come across familiar and understandable with a bit of guidance.

To make room for new LEGO sets every year, the LEGO Group must choose a selection of sets to retire annually. This only means that those sets are no longer being produced in factories around the world. Once stock of them has run out, they will not be restocked by the LEGO Group. This affects all retailers, even those not owned and operated by the LEGO Group.

The older a LEGO set is, the more likely it is to retire soon and you can keep track of exactly which LEGO sets are up for retirement next on our dedicated page. There are some exceptions to this advice though, usually including some of the biggest and more iconic LEGO models. These currently include 75192 Millennium Falcon at the time of writing, for example.

Retiring LEGO sets can be purchased before their retirement date, while stocks last, from all retailers and occasionally, some LEGO sets will stick around at some retailers long past their retirement date. Note that in the last few weeks before a LEGO set retires, production on that model may have stopped early and restocks are not always guaranteed. We recommend leaving at least a month unless you’re hoping to find a good deal.

Speaking of deals, it’s common that retailers will offer good discounts on retiring LEGO sets as they seek to clear stock and make room for newer models. These tend to happen in the last few months before their retirement date and aren’t difficult to find. Most discounted LEGO sets reduced by more than 30% tend to be retiring models.

Retired LEGO sets are occasionally still listed and available at retailers online and in-stores, despite no longer being in production but there’s absolutely no guarantee that they will stay that way for long. Since retired LEGO sets are no longer being produced in factories, there are no more restocks for that set and depending on how popular the build is, it may not last too long past its retirement date.

Specifically, LEGO.com does advertise when a set is retiring soon or is already retiring with a ‘last chance’ label on the listing. Otherwise, there’s no way of knowing in the moment what LEGO sets have retired unless you have already referred to a relevant resource such as our dedicated page. Most sellers will not state that a set has retired and simply list it or stock it as normal for as long as they have stock left.

In the UK, Sports Direct and Barnes & Noble in the US tend to be particularly good sources of retired LEGO sets, though you will have to refer to a relevant resource to know if that set has retired as retailers will not state one way or the other.

Secondary marketplaces such as eBay and BrickLink are also a good source of retired LEGO sets and sellers will usually happily advertise that a set is retired. Unfortunately, this comes with the understanding that these models will be more expensive than they were during their standard life cycle. Depending on demand, some retired LEGO sets can be much more expensive than you might be expecting.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
