Why is the rumoured LEGO Star Wars C-3PO set so expensive?
A buildable C-3PO figure is rumoured for later this year with a notably high price reported, suggesting that there must be a reason for the cost.
After years of waiting, multiple larger R2-D2 models and just about every major good-aligned droid from movies and games possible, the LEGO Group is rumoured to finally be turning their gaze towards the iconic and gold C-3PO later this year. It’s about time for the heroic protocol droid to expand beyond minifigures and a couple of older Technic figures too, and it would be good to finally pair up the droids as buildable figures (including the rumoured 75379 R2-D2).

August 2024 is reported to be the release window for a new buildable C-3PO figure, according to Instagram users 1414falconfan and childish_landino_chronicles. At 1,132 pieces, the rumoured price of $149.99 is unusually high, especially when compared to 75371 Chewbacca with 2,319 pieces for $199.99.
Ideally, the rumoured 75398 Buildable C-3PO could offer something beyond its piece count to justify such an expense. One of the more obvious reasons for the reported $149.99 price could be drum-lacquered gold detailing similar to 76191 Infinity Gauntlet. This probably wouldn’t cover the entirety of the droid but at least the head, part of the limbs and body would suffice.

Another possibility is that electronic elements could be included to enhance the model in other ways, such as glowing red eyes via light bricks based on The Rise of Skywalker, or maybe a shade of orange or yellow to depict a more iconic appearance of the character. Full motorisation might be too much to ask for, even at the rumoured $149.99.
There are a few options to pack an extra punch within the remainder of 75398 Buildable C-3PO’s rumoured price but at the time of writing this set is only a rumour and should be treated as such until officially confirmed as otherwise by the LEGO Group. Still, it’s about time that C-3PO gets his own set and it could be during the 25th anniversary of LEGO Star Wars no less.
