Will we ever get a LEGO Star Wars UCS playset again?
LEGO Star Wars’ most impressive playset available is nearly gone for good and it raises the question of their place in the future of the theme.
75290 Mos Eisley Cantina is part of the Master Builder Series of LEGO Star Wars sets which sits alongside the Ultimate Collector Series, especially in their level of detail. According to the LEGO Group, Master Builder Series sets are built with the play aspect in mind, having many play features, functions and interior details.
Still, the likes of 75331 The Razor Crest, 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge and 75313 AT-AT are comparable to Master Builder sets including 75222 Betrayal at Cloud City. 75098 Assault on Hoth is a member of the Ultimate Collector Series too but it fits the description of the Master Builder Series better.

The differences between the two series at this point are minimal. There’s a trend in recent sets that incorporate interior details and play features which might suggest that sets such as 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina will become rarer though.
In the current portfolio, there aren’t many big-budget playset builds with a substantial number of exclusive minifigures and it showcases just how unique 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina is. As the set is about to retire at the end of 2024, there’s no guarantee that there will be a set like it ever again.
Considering that it sold out in select regions before recently returning, it might be something to add to your wishlist. It’s not the only LEGO Star Wars playset, even counting smaller builds, but there’s no denying that such models are outnumbered by vehicle builds in LEGO Star Wars. That said, the number of location-based sets currently is still considerable at a range of price points.
As well as 75365 Yavin IV Rebel Base, you can pick up 75385 Ahsoka Tano’s Duel on Peridea and 75387 Boarding the Tantive IV at smaller price points, indicating that smaller location models certainly have a future in LEGO Star Wars.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ll see many other models such as 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina though. The difference between the 3,187-piece set compared to the likes of 75365 Yavin 4 Rebel Base is its price and the amount of resources the LEGO Group needs to allocate to it.
Both builds have been on sale multiple times in the past couple of years with some hefty savings to be had. That’s especially not common for UCS or MBS models and it suggests that there’s not as much demand for big-budget playsets over colossal vehicle creations. Should this be the case, it would be hard to blame the LEGO Group for pursuing further financial success.

Thankfully, the LEGO Group is not against interior details and play features in their biggest LEGO Star Wars sets entirely. Both 75331 The Razor Crest and 75397 Jabba’s Sail Barge have such inclusions at minifigure-scale to boot. Should no further UCS playsets be in the future of LEGO Star Wars, at least the most important features of 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina will likely continue to live on.
Whatever the future of big-budget playsets is in LEGO Star Wars, don’t forget that 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina retires later this year alongside an extensive list of models. A double LEGO Insiders points event is live right now too in case you need an excuse to pick it up.

A UCS playset would be nice, but I think that the Master Builder’s Collection makes a lot more sense in terms of a playset. The Ultimate Collector’s Series has found its niche in the nearly twenty-five years since it premiered, but that niche is not normally in playsets. While there have been a few playsets in the line in the past, most of the sets, and arguably the most popular of the sets are those depicting classic Star Wars spaceships at a very large, very impressive scale. The niche that the UCS has carved is certainly valid, but it leaves an opening in the Lego Star Wars theme for a series of sets depicting classic Star Wars locales at a very large, very impressive scale. Enter the MBC.
I am sad to see this beautiful set retire, as described in the attached post, but I don’t think we have seen the end of the MBC line, or of huge playsets. There is a rumor flying around that 2025 will see a UCS Ewok Village. While this is a great idea in theory, the idea of a giant Ewok village playset makes more sense coming from the Master Builder’s Collection rather than the UCS line.

I sure hope not.
