$170 LEGO Mario Kart should be as customisable as Icons car

A $170 LEGO Mario Kart set is rumoured to take the place of the usual LEGO Icons car later this year, but it can at least continue a recent feature.

A recent rumour from Instagram user lego_minecraft_goat claims that a $170 LEGO Super Mario set has been allotted to the new Mario Kart range, standing in place of the usual upscaled LEGO Icons car. That leaves one clear path for it to take – a massive kart recreation.

Taking the rumour with a pinch of salt, as well as our speculation that this is going to be an upscaled version of 72032 Standard Kart or another vehicle from the game series, you might be disappointed to hear the word that there won’t be a proper entry into the LEGO Icons 1:12 vehicle range this year. Despite this rumour, a $170 Mario Kart could carry on a tradition for the 1:12 range in a whimsical but authentic way.

Many of the 1:12 LEGO Icons models are customisable with included elements from a toolbox on top to removing the roof for a convertible creation. While a Mario Kart set might seem to be a drastically different entry into this range, it can at least continue that customisation feature in a way unique to the game series.

Mario Kart’s most recent games have included a customisable kart system with various parts that can be mixed and matched. While this feature is not confirmed to return for the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart game, it seems likely that Nintendo will bring back the beloved gameplay element. Either way, this presents the LEGO Group with the perfect opportunity to include various wheels, gliders, a propellor and more to customise a standard kart body.

There’s no doubt that a $170 LEGO Mario set would look strange alongside 10337 Lamborghini Countach 5000 Quattrovalvole and the rest of the 1:12 range, but this familiar and fun gameplay feature offers a way to continue part of the LEGO Icons range, even when it’s rumoured to be in place of a standard model in 2025.

Here’s everything currently confirmed and rumoured for LEGO Mario Kart this year, but take this latest report with an extra pinch of salt and caution just in case.

LEGO has been a part of my life ever since I was young. It all started when my brother passed down 7657 AT-ST to me. It’s guided me through my early years, through school and eventually through my degree in journalism. I still have all my collection proudly on display, including my many NINJAGO sets, my favourite of all the LEGO Group’s themes. Outside of Brick Fanatics I am an avid gamer and enjoy a good game of Dungeons & Dragons.
