2024 is shaping up to be quite the year for LEGO Space fans

More and more clues and rumours are suggesting that 2024 is going to be an exciting year for any LEGO Space fans out there.

Not only is there rumoured to be a LEGO Space Collectible Minifigure series on its way in 2024, but multiple themes are also incorporating the Classic Space logo into their branding for next year. With around half of the minifigures in the rumoured 71046 Space being throwbacks to retro characters and sub-themes like Blacktron, Ice Planet, and M-Tron, there’s growing evidence that Space will be an overarching theme for the LEGO Group in 2024.

This is somewhat unusual. While many themes like LEGO City or Star Wars will focus on a particular topic or anniversary within one year, it’s rare that we see it carried across multiple themes and sets. With LEGO Collectible Minifigures (if the rumours are true), City, DREAMZzz, Technic, and even the child-focused DUPLO theme all incorporating Classic Space branding into their ranges in 2024, it’s clear that the LEGO Group is trying to appeal to a wide range of space lovers. Whether you’re after a realistic portrayal of space tech with LEGO Technic 42179 Planet Earth and Moon in Orbit or a fantastical vehicle like LEGO DREAMZzz 71475 Mr Oz’s Space Car, there’s something for everyone.

Looking ahead, however, what could this mean for other retro themes moving forward? Could each year to follow also feature multi-theme references to nostalgic sets, like LEGO Castle, Town, and more? It’s already been proven that pulling on people’s love of the past works well for the LEGO Group: just look at the response to remake sets 10320 Eldorado Fortress and 10497 Galaxy Explorer.

Remaking and revisiting past popular sets is a real reward for LEGO fans who have been around for decades. Many beloved sets were first built with a much more limited range of elements and building techniques, so giving modern LEGO designers the freedom to return to them can often result in some truly stunning sets – although it does also beg the question of what fans truly want from a remake. The recent GWP, 40601 Majisto’s Magical Workshop, had some criticism for staying too close to the original, while others are critiqued for straying too far away.

For now, the LEGO Group’s focus on LEGO Classic Space in 2024 doesn’t appear to be focused on remaking older sets, however. Instead, the use of retro branding and, if rumours are to be believed, a mix of both old and new space minifigures in 71046 Space appears to be reminding fans of the classic theme they loved, while mixing in plenty of new content across multiple themes. Whether it will remain as subtle branding forever or flourish into a more concrete collection in 2024 remains to be seen but, all in all, next year is certainly shaping up to be a good one for LEGO Classic Space fans.
