Five predictions for LEGO in 2023

With 2023 on the horizon, we share some of our predictions for what LEGO fans have to look forward to over the next few months.

2022 has given us plenty of exciting LEGO sets to enjoy, with themes like Star Wars, Speed Champions and even CITY providing some quality models. But time inevitably marches on – and a number of 2023 sets have already been unveiled, whetting our appetites for the next few months.

Of course there’s lots of 2023 stuff we haven’t seen yet, and we’ve got a few predictions as to what 2023 will offer us. Read on for what else we think LEGO fans can enjoy this year:

5 – A new modular buildings GWP

From time to time, larger LEGO sets are accompanied by a promotional item designed to augment it. 40140 Flower Cart, for instance, was designed to connect with 10246 Detective’s Office – as it formed an additional link in that set’s cookie smuggling operation. More recently, 40532 Vintage Taxi was designed to connect to 10297 Boutique Hotel – naturally, as a means of transporting guests to and from it.

Nothing has been announced by the LEGO Group in this regard, but we think there’s at least a chance of a companion to 10312 Jazz Club. However, since these tend to be revealed a little while after the modular buildings are, you may want to hold off on buying the newest one – at least until the end of January.

4 – A new ‘Big Bang’ theme

The LEGO Group has released several of these themes throughout the last decade: story driven, original concepts that last about three years. Recent examples of these include Legends of Chima, NEXO KNIGHTS and Hidden Side, each of which took LEGO sets in intriguing new directions.

It’s possible that the Monkie Kid theme is satisfying this particular need – but, considering Monkie Kid GWPs have been included with NINJAGO purchases, there’s clearly a strong overlap in customer interest there. As such, another theme that offers a different vein of subject matter could be just what the LEGO lineup needs.

3 – Another LEGO Creator tribute act

The LEGO Creator 3-in-1 theme has become a refuge for LEGO concepts that have fallen by the wayside. Fans of the Pirates, Castle and even Vikings themes have recently been able to buy new LEGO sets inspired by this subject matter, although they are typically more expensive than most other Creator 3-in-1 sets.

Regardless, we’re hoping that the Creator 3-in-1 range continues this trend in 2023. A set inspired by Ancient Egypt would be a great move; it’s been explored in themes like Adventurers and Pharaoh’s Quest, as well as (more recently) the Architecture theme. From that perspective, there’s plenty of prior subject matter – real or imaginary – for LEGO Creator 3-in-1 to draw from.

2 – A new direction for LEGO video games

While LEGO video games are universally popular, they’ve also stagnated a little bit in recent years. Fortunately, that’s started to change. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga shook up the formula that LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game established in 2005, while other releases like LEGO Builder’s Journey and LEGO Bricktales have reintroduced a stronger building element to their broader game design.

With TT Games hiring for several different positions, and a mysterious polybag popping up online, now seems to be a very good time to be a LEGO video game fan. Hopefully these stories will coalesce into a type of LEGO game we haven’t seen yet.

1 – An £800 set

LEGO sets have continued to grow in complexity and ambition over the last few years, with releases like 75313 AT-AT taking LEGO sets to literal new heights. Of course, they also come with price tags to match: that model goes for £734.99 / $849.99 / €834.99 at full price.

From that perspective, an £800 LEGO seems inevitable – and for all we know, we could see it sooner than you think. But what would it even be? A licensed set seems obvious, and with 75252 Imperial Star Destroyer retiring this year there’s a gap in the market for a grey LEGO slab. As such, a new Super Star Destroyer seems like a safe bet – especially since such a LEGO model appeared back in 2011.

It’s likely that LEGO fans more broadly will hit their price limit at some point. But if sets like 75313 AT-AT tell us anything, it’s that such a limit hasn’t been hit just yet.
