LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2 identification method isn’t foolproof

The plot thickens for identifying all 12 LEGO 71039 Marvel Series 2 minifigures as it seems that previous methods aren’t as reliable as first hoped.

Ashnflash has explored a recently discovered method to theoretically pick out a specific character in 71039 Marvel Series 2’s blind boxes, coming to the conclusion that it’s not exactly foolproof.

Depending on your region, the codes featured on the boxes in 71039 Marvel Series 2 may not be as reliable as previously thought.

Trialling the recent guide with a full box of European 71039 Marvel Series 2 minifigures, the YouTuber finds that the codes are unreliable and may instead be related to the batch number, rather than a specific character.

Other theoretical methods to help identify one of the 12 included characters are the order of boxes in the case and the weights of the pieces inside each box.

Noting the differences in the box order between the North American and European boxes, it could be that one box is ordered one way and one is ordered the other due to the packing processes in the LEGO Group’s regional factories.

Alternatively, the box order could be completely randomised, and any similarities spotted so far are merely coincidental or limited to the initial batches. Looking at the video, this appears to be the case.

Weighing the bricks inside is an entirely new way to identify LEGO Collectible Minifigures and may require an accurate set of portable scales to take in-store. It’s certainly more involved than other methods and may not be to everyone’s tastes.

While it seems to be working well in the video, the similar weights of some minifigures mean that this method isn’t perfect either. Though combining the potential box order, weight and code (in select regions) might prove more fruitful.

Ashnflash’s combination of weighing via scales, checking the codes, and even shaking the boxes to hear which has more elements appears to work at the end of the video, for the most part.

However, this is still drawing conclusions on what are ultimately small sample sizes, using what limited number of boxes have found their way onto store shelves early, or sent out for review.

For now, it seems that there’s no surefire single way to identify the character in each blind-boxed 71039 Marvel Series 2 minifigure. Those using a combination of methods should take care too as it’s entirely possible that you’ll end up with a duplicate character.

We’d advise caution on all guides to identifying the minifigures in 71039 Marvel Series 2’s boxes ahead of their September 1 launch. The problem is seemingly more perplexing than anyone was expecting and there’s yet to be a definitive answer.

Those not wanting to dive into 71039 Marvel Series 2 blind should keep an eye out, with caution, for more guides on finding your favourite character ahead of the series’ release on September 1 for £3.49 / $4.99 / €4.99.
