Released September 1, 2022, if past years are anything to go by, 75340 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar will hang around for about a month on shelves in toy stores and supermarkets before overnight selling out and never being restocked, before the late-rising LEGO fans then start a desperate hunt for any that may still be out there in the wild. Don’t miss out, the last few years these calendars have well and truly disappeared before you would otherwise expect.

Reviewing any of the LEGO advent calendars is a bit of a pointless exercise, for how effectively over the past decade these day-by-day mini-build and minifigure collections have created their own little cute, seasonal market. Counting down to Christmas is all the more fun if there’s a little piece of LEGO to build each day along the way, right?

Nobody says no to that, regardless of the depth of build or how accurate it may be to anything in particular. Indeed, some LEGO Star Wars advent calendars of past have added an element of guesswork at times, for the artistic licence taken in scaling way, way down something recognisable from a galaxy far, far away, into something that a six-year-old can build in 10 or fewer pieces.

These aren’t LEGO sets, per se, and they don’t hold true to the same standards LEGO Star Wars fans apply to pretty much every other release in the theme. They are fun, little, engaging builds to keep you occupied in bite-size chunks, or until one of the minifigures comes along.

Because, builds aside, 75340 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar is just like its predecessors for offering quite a mix of LEGO Star Wars minifigures, including three this year that are exclusive. There are Christmas jumper versions of C-3PO and R2-D2 and there’s also a beach-themed Darth Vader complete with twin suns vest.

Combined with a Luke Skywalker and Snowtrooper straight out of Hoth, and a Clone Commander straight out of doubling up as a pilot in 75309 Republic Gunship and puzzling army builders in the always-sold-out 40558 Clone Trooper Command Station, 75340 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar has a genuine and plentiful mix of characters, as has pretty much every other previous version of this set.

In a year that has seen price rises hit LEGO Star Wars – twice if you are in the UK – it’s somewhat inevitable that 75340 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar represents a £5 / $5 / €5 increase in 2022, but it’s not for nothing to say that this is the first price rise for the set in a number of years. As a result, it’s one of the more palatable increases we’ve seen this year, and truly there is no feeling of less value or fewer pieces across the 24 items in the set, and three exclusive minifigures feels like the most we’ve ever had from a single advent calendar.

If there’s one aspect that does cheapen the experience, it’s that LEGO Star Wars sometimes count droids as characters, so that battle droid and the holiday-themed GONK droid are also, apparently, minifigures.

Are there any cons to picking up something like 75340 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar? LEGO advent calendars serve a different purpose to regular LEGO sets, and creations such as 75340 LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar are exactly in keeping with this. Nothing will challenge you across the month of December, but nothing will truly disappoint. These are fun little builds to occupy you until Christmas Day. Bonus LEGO, and no-one is ever disappointed with such a thing.

They come in at about the same price per plushie as one advent calendar, and are way more cuddly. Our favourite is 5007464 Chewbacca Holiday Plush and he’s already sold out.
