Aquaman 2 official trailer highlights same old patterns for DC

A full trailer has been released for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but it doesn’t look like DC is finding a new path anytime soon.

On the whole, it hasn’t been a good few years for DC fans, either in cinemas or in LEGO stores. The teaser trailer has already highlighted what’s missing from LEGO DC, but the full trailer for the upcoming sequel suggests that DC hasn’t learned from past criticism. Earlier films have been labelled as repetitive and often attempting to bite off more than they can chew, fitting in too many characters or plotlines into one film without enough build-up (looking at you, Justice League).

The trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom also introduces us to multiple new characters, as Aquaman assembles a team to battle a new threat. While there are plenty of reasonably impressive underwater scenes, the familiar formula suggests that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom won’t be introducing many new ideas as yet. They’re even repeating the same villain, Black Manta, who featured as one of the evil duo in the first Aquaman film.

Based on what we’ve seen so far, it doesn’t look like the Aquaman sequel will be reviving DC anytime soon. This likely doesn’t bode well for any LEGO DC fans, but you never know what might be around the corner. If any sets are released alongside the movie, it could at least give us a Black Manta minifigure specifically based on the DCEU version of the villain. With his unique helmet and costume, it would make for a pretty unusual minifigure. Check out Black Manta and the full Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer via the embedded video below.
