At least three ‘yet to be announced’ LEGO themes are in the works

At least three brand new and ‘yet to be announced’ LEGO themes are in the works, according to a former LEGO designer.

The LEGO Group has been pumping out new themes at a rapid rate over the past year or so, ramping up the variety of products in its portfolio through both licensed and homegrown lines. While LEGO Avatar was the only brand new theme to launch in 2022, four different product lines arrived on shelves in 2023 – Sonic the Hedgehog, DREAMZzz, Gabby’s Dollhouse and Indiana Jones – and two new themes are already confirmed for 2024 in Animal Crossing and Peppa Pig.

Three more new (or returning) licences are also rumoured to be on the way in 2023, including LEGO Wicked, LEGO Fortnite and LEGO Despicable Me 4. And former LEGO designer James May has now confirmed that at least three ‘yet to be announced’ themes are on the way, all of which he worked on in 2023 before his departure from the LEGO Group earlier this year.

May listed the themes he’s worked on to Brickset, among which are DUPLO, Dimensions, Creator 3-in-1, Friends, Icons, Ideas and ‘three yet to be announced themes’. What exactly those might be is anyone’s guess at the moment, but given LEGO product lead times are traditionally around 18 months to two years, there are no guarantees that they’re any or all of the other new themes rumoured for 2024.

They could of course be Fortnite, Despicable Me 4 and Wicked, but they could just as easily be other new themes the LEGO Group has up its sleeve for 2025. The important bit here is that the company doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down the rate at which it’s prepared to try out new product lines…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
