Australian footballer Sam Kerr unveils enormous brick-built model of herself

One of the faces of the LEGO Group’s Play Unstoppable campaign has unveiled a huge brick-built statue to celebrate the just-released 40634 Icons of Play.

Australian footballer Sam Kerr, who plays as a forward for both Chelsea in the FA Women’s Super League and the Australia women’s national team, originally comes from Perth. As a tribute to their local sports star, LEGO Certified Store Karrinyup in Perth has unveiled a large brick-built model of the football player, complete with an enormous football to kick about.

Kerr visited the LEGO Store to unveil the model, comparing it to the far smaller but equally detailed minifigure version of herself that was released on June 6 as part of 40634 Icons of Play, alongside other famous female footballers like Megan Rapinoe, Y?ki Nagasato, and Asisat Oshoala.

Alongside the set, the LEGO Group recently launched its Play Unstobbale campaign, designed  ‘to challenge stereotypes around play and creative building and encourage girls to unlock the freedom they need to play without boundaries’. Indeed, Kerr herself sees great value in highlighting and promoting the success of women in sport.

“When I was growing up, these things weren’t possible for young girls or someone like me. When I was a young kid, I didn’t have these dreams because there was not much opportunity for women’s footballers,” Kerr told The West Australian. “It’s amazing to see where the game has grown and things like this only enhance the game.”

“I wish I had these things when I was a kid, so that’s the goal, to break down those stereotypes for young girls now that they can really do whatever they want and be whoever they want to be. It’s a proud moment for me, it might seem like something fun and silly, but it is honestly amazing and something I’ll probably have in my house when I’m older and remember forever.”
