The first LEGO sets based on Avengers: Doomsday have been revealed, but the minifigure-packed builds have given us more questions than answers.
The first Avengers film since 2019 hits cinemas in December, and this week has already delivered plenty for Marvel fans. The first Avengers: Doomsday trailer and a San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel packed with reveals has begun building hype around the movie.
Now, the LEGO Group has joined the party, unveiling five sets due to hit shelves this October. Between 76352 Avengers: Doomsday: New Avengers Tower, 76348 Epic Battle: Avengers: Doomsday, 76347 Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet, 76345 Doctor Doom Bust, and 40880 Avengers: Doomsday Heroes & Villain, we've gained a little more context – but also a lot more questions.
Here are seven of the biggest mysteries raised by the new LEGO sets.
What's the deal with Doom's magic?
The biggest question surrounds Doctor Doom's magic. The film's main villain, played by Robert Downey Jr., appears in all five sets, and in every one he is shown using both red and green magical energy.
There are already plenty of theories, with some suggesting Doom has stolen Wanda Maximoff's powers or somehow harnessed the Scarlet Witch's magic. Until we see more in a future trailer – or the film itself – we're still missing the context.
Are we really seeing the X-Mansion destroyed... again?
The X-Mansion just can't catch a break.
It has already been destroyed in X2: X-Men United and X-Men: Apocalypse, while Logan describes its destruction off-screen. In the trailer, we see an explosion erupt beneath the mansion's staircase, and the building appears decrepit.
The sets don't inspire much confidence either. 76348 Epic Battle: Avengers: Doomsday includes the Xavier School sign buried among the rubble, suggesting things don't end well for the iconic mansion.
Are Magneto and Mystique X-Men now?
The trailer makes it clear that Professor X and Magneto have put their differences aside and are fighting on the same side.
What's particularly interesting is that both Magneto and Mystique are shown wearing belts emblazoned with the X logo. Given how much time has seemingly passed since we last saw these versions of the characters, it could suggest they've officially become members of the X-Men long before the events of Doomsday.
What's the fabric wrapped around Doctor Doom's arm?
Only the Doctor Doom minifigure included in 76345 Doctor Doom Bust features arm printing, and one detail immediately stands out.
A full-size costume displayed at Comic-Con showed a strip of fabric wrapped around Doom's forearm, and that same detail appears on the minifigure.
Is it a trophy from a previous battle? A mourning band? Something tied to his magical powers? Right now, we have no idea – but it's certainly deliberate. Perhaps Doom doesn’t gain the band until the end of the movie, and that is why his arms are blank in the other minifigures, too.
Why is Cyclops flying the New Avengers' Quinjet?
76347 Avengers: Doomsday Quinjet features the darker aircraft bearing the logo of the Thunderbolts-turned-New Avengers.
Yet the passengers raise eyebrows. Cyclops, The Thing and Captain America are all aboard, despite there seemingly being no other members of the New Avengers present.
Why are the X-Men and Fantastic Four using the team's aircraft? Has something happened to the rest of the New Avengers, forcing these heroes together?
What were the New Avengers thinking?
Speaking of the New Avengers, 76352 Avengers: Doomsday: New Avengers Tower shows Doctor Doom locked inside a prison cell.
The obvious question is... why?
Assuming you can simply lock up one of Marvel's most dangerous villains seems incredibly optimistic, regardless of what they know about him. If that's genuinely part of the film, there's every chance the New Avengers end up paying the price.
How can Doom be fighting everyone?
The final question is perhaps the biggest of them all.
Across the sets, Doom appears to be battling different groups of heroes in completely separate locations. Is he taking each team on one by one? Is he using magic to project himself across multiple battlefields? Or could Doom Bots be playing a major role?
However it happens, Doom somehow appears to be the central threat in every major conflict, making this one of the film's biggest mysteries.
We'll likely have answers by the end of the year when Avengers: Doomsday finally arrives.
Of course, there's always the possibility these LEGO sets were designed using early concept art, with Doctor Doom simply included wherever possible to show his presence in the film. Even so, they've given Marvel fans plenty to speculate about before the film hits cinemas.
