BrickLink locks all accounts ahead of re-opening

BrickLink has shared more details on the planned re-opening of its online LEGO marketplace, confirming that all accounts will be locked as a preventative measure.

The secondary marketplace – which is owned by the LEGO Group – shut down out of the blue last week, with initial reports suggesting foul play at the hands of hackers. BrickLink eventually confirmed that a handful of accounts had been accessed by ‘unauthorised individuals’, promising more updates would come soon. The team then published an update on Instagram last night confirming that they’re preparing to re-open the site.

An updated maintenance message has since appeared overnight, offering more clarity on the situation – and what to expect next. “Our investigations so far suggest that a very small number of accounts have or may potentially have been accessed by unauthorised individuals with data obtained outside our platform,” the statement reads. “We’ll be in contact with these members directly with more details on how to reopen their accounts.”

The update reiterates that BrickLink is being readied for re-opening, but stops short of sharing a specific time or date. When it does come back online, all accounts will be locked – whether they were affected by the cybersecurity incident or not – as a precautionary measure, prompting members to reset their passwords before being able to log in. There’s also a reminder to create ‘strong, unique passwords’ as part of ‘good data security’.

The statement doesn’t advise changing your general LEGO.com account password, perhaps indicating the two platforms – LEGO.com and BrickLink – are not linked internally. But members of the community have suggested updating your LEGO.com account password, along with any accounts that share your BrickLink password, as a further precautionary measure.

“Thank you for your continued patience and support – the kind posts we see from all of you on social media continue to make a real difference to the team here,” the statement finishes. “We know it’s very frustrating, there is light at the end of the tunnel, we thank you for having a bit more patience with us.”

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
